When you have a spare day and are in the vicinity go visit this beautiful place! The road to the entrance is not that bad, it's (anno 2022) paved and without to many bumps and gaps. It's a well over 30km long drive from the entrance to the calakmul temples but worth it. Lots of animals to spot during the drive. Arived at the The calakmul temples you find yourself in the middle of the rainforest. Prepare for a total of 5km (up to 10-12km depending on detours to see all of the temples)! You will walk on paths with trees, birds, an occasional monkey, deer or other animals. The temples are well preserved, and one of the few in the middle of the rainforest. And best, one of the very few temples that still allow climbing on top (if you dare). This rewards you with an amazing 360° view of the area towards the horizon. Recommended is to have a little bit of stamina (since it's a walk around of minimum 5km,more if you take detours), bring loads of water, sunscreen, bug repellant and probably a hat. Total entrance fees are around 450 mex. Pesos (about 23€ or usd). Definitely worth the price and one of the main (less discovered) highlights of the...
Read moreAbsolutely amazing place to immerse yourself in nature, wildlife and history. We enjoyed hiking the structures and seeing the residences. The jungle is so rich with animal sounds and lush vegetation. We also saw lots of monkeys (howlers and spiders), and heard toucans although we didn't see them.
PSA: There is lots of construction going on for building the Maya Train. I strongly recommend you check INAH website for entry and exit times as they are very specific due to construction work. We visited on Mar 8 and they allowed entry until 10am-ish and then all visitors had to leave the park by 2 pm. It's also a 60 km road between the park entrance and the highway (takes about an hour to drive due to potholes and construction) so plan...
Read moreWild turkeys, wild monkeys, howling and spider monkeys, incredible ruins, tucans, deer, really amazing atmosphere and experience. Walking on the ancient Mayan road... The trees, liane, the poisonous tree, its antidote always in the vicinity... It was my first experience in the jungle, in the rain forest, I must admit. We drove a lot of hours to get here, hired a local guide. It was all worth it. I had my doubts along the way, but once I was there all doubts vanished. On top of it all, these are the truly Mayan ruins in Yucatan, second only to Tikal (not Yukatan). All the others are much more recent. The temple inside the big temple in Calakmul dates as back as 400...
