Embarcadero Cahuaré Cañón del Sumidero — Attraction in Chiapas

Cañón del Sumidero is worth 5 stars. It is spectacular, and seeing the crocodiles and monkeys and birds is amazing! It's a fantastic experience, especially seeing it from the boat, and then from the lookouts above. Embarcadero Cahuaré deserves 3 stars though. The boats were safe, their loading/unloading and ticket buying system is ok, the driver did his job finding animals and informing us; but overall, this tourism co-op gives the impression of caring more for tips and profits than the actual canyon they talk about. The boat driver mentioned at the beginning that he would do his best to spot the animals, but it was a little out of his control. But even so, he would hope to make our boat ride memorable, and that we would thank him with generous tips. 35km later, at the turn around point, he stops in the middle of the lake and tells us how he has done his best, and he hopes we would show our gratitude and appreciation with a large tip. He then proceeds to walk down the length of the boat holding a bucket, receiving his tips. Then he drives the boat to a community-run shop on a boat, where we are encouraged to purchase snacks and drinks. No rubbish bins are provided, and no mention of holding on to your trash, so hence half the rubbish flies out of the boat on the ride back. And that explains the amount of trash you find floating along the river. No one bothers to clean it or lift it up. It's just part of the scenery. How sad, to think this community has such a spectacular natural reserve in their back yard, and they don't care that it is littered. Hence the feeling that their passion is not so much...

Hola. Quiero hacer una opinión muy honesta de este sitio en especial por qué soy guía de turistas certificado y llevo años trabajando con la gran mayoría de los embarcaderos de la zona. También quiero hacer este comentario por qué he leído algunas reseñas y algunas no corresponden con el embarcadero sino de otros. Este Embarcadero de nombre CAHUARÉ (caguaré) es el más popular y el que cuenta con la mejor infraestructura de la zona, su precio es de $330.00 pp con Brazalete CONANP incluido, cuenta con descuentos a INAPAM, y para niños menores de 12 años. Las lanchas van desde las 12 personas hasta las 45. Si vas por tu cuenta el tiempo de espera va a variar y se recomienda llegar antes de las 11 am pues es la hora que llegan las agencias y se puede llenar el cupo mínimo en tour “compartido” de 15 personas, si llegas después de las 11:00 el flujo disminuye y se tarda más tiempo en hacerlo, esto sucede en TODOS los embarcaderos. Leí por ahí que le dan preferencia a las agencias cosa que es mentira, algunas agencias lo que hacen es tener el cupo mínimo o máximo y por eso se van antes al recorrido que los que están en la fila, recordando que también hay lanchas privadas y claro el costo es mucho mayor. El tema de las explicaciones ya varía dependiendo de cada lanchero, ahí si no existe un estándar, es la suerte, y de suerte también es que veas o no animales. El tema de la basura es algo recurrente en temporadas de Mayo a Noviembre cuando las lluvias son muy fuertes, si vas en los meses de Septiembre y octubre segurísimo veras mucha, mucha basura y esto es un problema ya a nivel regional con el pésimo control de desechos de los ayuntamientos y sociedad en Chiapa de Corzo, Acala y Tuxtla Gutiérrez, de ninguna manera los lancheros permiten que los turistas contaminen con basura plástica el cauce del río, el operador tiene la facultad de denunciar a la persona a las autoridades de la CONANP. Otro punto que creo si es muy importante es lo de los TIPS o propina, hay ya una maña entre la gran mayoría de los lancheros de TODAS las cooperativas o embarcaderos, casi casi obligan a los turistas a darles cuotas establecidas $20.00 pp o algunos hasta $50.00 pp, argumentando que sus sueldos son bajos, los directivos de las cooperativas tienen letreros en las taquillas de que NO ESTAS OBLIGADO A DAR PROPINA, si el operador te hace algún comentario denunciar el acto inmediatamente al llegar al embarcadero ¡no te quedes callado! la propina es algo espontáneo y depende de la economía y cultura de cada persona. He tenido en los últimos años varias situaciones relacionado a eso y pues sólo queda denunciar con los directivos eso ayuda bastante 🙏. TIP de oro 🚨si deseas la experiencia completa en el parque nacional debes usar cualquier embarcadero oficial siempre y cuando TE DEN tu brazalete CONANP (si usas INAPAM o descuento de niño no se te da pues de esa institución es el descuento), si quieres hacer el recorrido hasta el parque nacional NUNCA contrates las lanchas con techo o toldo estas no tienen el permiso de capitanía de puerto para ingresar al cañón, te venden el tour “corto” casi al precio igual que el recorrido oficial. Si por tu cuenta eliges el recorrido por el río, ese ya es tu asunto y decisión. Vi por ahí un tema con los chalecos salvavidas, si ves un chaleco en mal estado tienes la facultad de pedir otro o ir directamente y buscar el que a ti más te parezca. En temporadas altas hay muchas personas, tienes que ir con la disponibilidad de esperar el tiempo necesario. Lleva tu gorra y bloqueador solar. El lugar cuenta con estacionamiento, servicios sanitarios (con pago extra), souvenirs, área de snacks. Afuera del embarcadero hay un restaurante económico muy rico...

The trip was great, but we would not recommend this tour provider. They were very unfriendly. They told us the tour would start once 17 people had arrived. However, at that point, they had only just started selling tickets. So we had to wait until 38 people joined the boat. In the end, the boat didn’t leave until around 10 AM, even though the last departure was supposed to be at 12 PM. The canyon itself is amazing. We saw crocodiles and monkeys. At the end of the canyon, near the dam, the captain said something in Spanish—essentially implying that if we didn’t give him a tip, he wouldn’t take us back. By the way, the entire tour was in Spanish, and no one even tried to say a word in English. Then, he went around with his hat, insisting that we give him a tip. When we told him we didn’t have any cash, he was visibly annoyed. Despite the beautiful canyon, we were quite disappointed by this unpleasant experience. We recommend choosing a different...
