I've come here during my vacation twice now. Both times we were treated with respect and kindness. The first time, I utilized the option to have a tour guide with me so I could maximize how much I could learn about the history of Cozumel. The second time, I opted to venture out on my own with my daughter (no tour guide). We were able to take our time, take breaks when needed, and just kind of stroll around, checking out the local terrain as well as the ruins. It's extremely interesting and fun! I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Cozumel!
Bring water so you don't have to buy it there. It's very hot and humid here, you will likely want water.
With a tour guide it takes about 2.5 hours. Without a tour guide you can scoot through and see everything as quickly as hour to an hour and a half, or you can meander at your own pace and take as long as you want.
Worth noting: you have to pay twice - once at the front entrance (I think it was USD $20/person but I don't remember. It was around that ) (card or cash) and then a second time before entering the ruins. The second price is USD...
Read moreStopped here as part of a tour. We were the only ones there. Saw a dance that was really good and the only saving grace. Ate a couple ok tacos with the waitress slamming a tip jar down with our plates. So rude. Sat thru a tequila tasting that was pushy salesmanship at its best. Was impressed with their “tequila” aging and etc. husband bought some. Afterward read all the reviews of scamming about the tequila that they swore was made in Cozumel. They also said this tequila was prized everywhere and so expensive. Couldn’t find it anywhere on the internet after we left or even at some tequila stores in Cancun and Playa del Carmen. And yes, we fell for their scam and bought 4 bottles. One of the reasons it is so “smooth” is it’s less than half the proof of regular tequila. Skip this tourist trap and go to the museum if you want to learn about the Mayans. All that’s here are people trying to sell you chocolate,...
Read moreAppreciate that Otoch took us for a last minute visit from our private tour, but wish they collected tips at the end of the experience or included it in the entrance price so participants aren’t approached with an empty coconut at every turn. It’s more than a little disruptive to the immersive experience. Dancers at the sun god ceremony gave it 110% effort so that was great, chocolate abs honey tastings and cochinita pibil tacos and horchata were also welcome treats, and the host Bernice gave a lot of great cultural background to Mayan customs which we...
