One of the main advantages of this place is that it’s relatively close to Mexico City, which is always a plus considering how many people live there. However, if you’re a tourist visiting for a short time, I’d say skip this entirely. Locals probably already know everything about it anyway, but I’ll share my thoughts.
First, it’s extremely peaceful. Second, dress warmly—seriously. It was hot when I left Mexico City, but by the time I got to the lagoons, it was anything but. The wind is strong, and a jacket or at least a thick sweater is a good idea.
Be warned: this place is wild and very basic. Finding a toilet isn’t easy, there’s no electricity, no phone signal, and you can only pay in cash. Keep that in mind before heading out. That being said, you can get some good, inexpensive food. You’ll also be offered horseback rides about a hundred times—prices are reasonable if that’s your thing. I also saw some locals fishing, though I have no idea if it’s actually allowed.
So, why come here? Simply to escape city life for a while and enjoy nature. The best part isn’t where most people gather—it’s on the other side of the lagoon. I highly recommend walking there; it’s incredibly quiet and feels almost magical.

Después de Huitzilac no hay nada de señal de celular, ni en la carretera ni en las Lagunas.
La carretera de Huitzilac a las Lagunas es estrecha pero en buen estado, mucha subida, sólo es ir con precaución.
Recomendable llegar de día, abren desde temprano (no sé la hora) pero a las 9am llegan los de los puestos de alimentos junto con las atracciones. Venden papalotes, paseos a caballo y en lancha, refrescos y cositas de tienda. No se cobra la entrada.
Los puestos de alimentos son de precio regular de lugar turístico, y los alimentos son de buena calidad, nada del otro mundo.
Hay asadores al aire libre, baños limpios (cobran) y basureros. Se puede hacer fogata, necesario llevar su propia leña.
La seguridad es muy buena en el frente de la Laguna grande, donde están las tracciones turísticas y todo eso, hay gente de SEMARNAT y policía Estatal dando rondines desde las 9am hasta las 6pm. Después de eso se van, y ellos mismos te dicen que si te quedas otro rato o a acampar en esa área, es bajo tu propio riesgo.
Se puede acampar de forma segura en las áreas verdes junto de las oficinas de SEMARNAT, donde pernoctan los vigilantes, que es a unos 150 metros de la entrada principal a la Laguna, y hay baño y mesitas y puedes hacer fogata. De ahí igual se ve la Laguna (sería la orilla del otro lado de la zona turística) y está muy seguro y bonito. Nos cobraron $40 por persona, aunque se supone no deberían cobrar, pero bueno, por estar seguros 🤷🏾♂️
Recomendable llevar lámpara, y casas de campaña que aguanten lluvia o lonas. También bien abrigados, hace mucho frío.
Para visitar en familia, con niños, comer, fogata nocturna con cuentos de terror y asar salchichas y bombones está Perfecto.
Se pueden ingerir bebidas alcohólicas con moderación. Y claro, recoger toda la basura que se lleva.
También se puede llevar mascotas, mucha gente lleva perros, si el perro es nervioso y/o no sabe convivir con otros animales se recomienda llevarlo con correa.
