Archaeological Zone of Zaachila — Attraction in Oaxaca

Zaachila is a modest but intriguing archaeological site, though it doesn’t offer as much to see compared to other ancient sites in the region. Situated on a hill overlooking the town, the site includes two excavated tombs and the remains of an ancient dwelling foundation. While the structures are minimal, the ability to enter one of the tombs and view what was once the extravagant burial of a ruler and his subjects is a unique experience. Some of the original artifacts from the site are now housed in other museums, like the main archaeological museum in Mexico City.

The hilltop location also provides some nice views of the surrounding area, which is worth the short hike. Zaachila might not be a destination site on its own, but visiting on a Thursday makes it more worthwhile—you can also explore the weekly market next door.

En el año de 1962, el arqueólogo Roberto Gallegos Ruiz exploró la zona arqueológica, realizando una croquización de las estructuras y una somera descripción de ellas, identificando características del sistema constructivo, definiendo etapas constructivas en asociación a materiales cerámicos, e interviniendo el edificio denominado Montículo “A”, localizado al suroeste de la parte central del área ceremonial. Los muros que conforman la estructura en su parte superior, presentan la forma tradicional de los palacios Zapotecos, con un patio central de planta cuadrada y cuartos distribuidos alrededor ocupados para vivienda por los grupos de alto rango dentro de la sociedad. En cuanto a las “Tumba 1” y “Tumba 2”, ambas presentan arquitectura formal, constituida de un umbral de bajada, una antecámara y una cámara principal. Así mismo, se han encontrado restos de estuco pintado en color rojo en la “Tumba 1”, así como la representación de personajes antropomorfos y zoomorfos que tienen relación con la muerte, para el caso de la “Tumba 2”. Durante las exploraciones realizadas en ambas tumbas, se encontraron entierros humanos, objetos de cerámica, oro, piedras preciosas, así como otras materias primas.Se compone de una sola cámara sin decoración. Very small site with only 1 mound, with one tomb accessible. Tomb 1 has excellently preserved figures and makes the site worth it if you are in Zaachila to visit the Thursday market.
