We had a great time at Punta Sur. We rented scooters for the day (though maybe get a car, the trip was a bit much for scooters) and stopped at the lighthouse. "188 steps closer to heaven" is what the sign on the entrance to the lighthouse reads.
Next we visited the museum, which is nice, though everything is written in Spanish. We met a very nice park ranger, George, who walked us through the woods to see a crocodile and her babies. He also showed us a Mayan cenote. We climbed a tower in the forest and had a wonderful view of the lighthouse. NOTE - If you walk through the forest, bring bug spray! Mosquitos are horrible.
After we left, we rode further into the park and came across the most beautiful beaches. We didn't stay long, but they had food, drinks, snorkeling, and chairs to lounge on the beach. You could sit for free, though there is a charge to rent the snorkel equipment and eat/drink. You can pay $60/day for "all inclusive" and get the drinks and food for free. Highly recommend this as the prices are $20 for a drink and about the same for most food items.
Park isn't open on Sundays so plan...
Read moreMy husband and I were escorted by private taxi to view the sites around the 60-kilometer (37-mile) loop in Cozumel. Along the way, we visited a swamp with man- eating crocodiles; Mayan ruins circa 1200 a d.; and a lighthouse with 133 steps to the top. The views of the hardscrabble land and turbulent ocean from the height of the Fresnel lens of the lighthouse were stunning. We also saw frigates and falcons, pelicans and pedestrians, and surfers and cenotes. The last part of the loop was through a residential area of San Miguel where we saw pharmacies, medical facilities, a naval base, a high school, gas stations, grocery stores, and all kinds of businesses that serve the community. After five months of COVID-19 lockdown where the citizenry couldn't even go to the beach without the possibility of being arrested, Cozumel is back in swing. Thank you to our wonderful driver for escorting us to his favorite island sites. He proudly calls...
Read more(FAKE ITEMS FOR SALE) The view from here is amazing. I believe there are 130+ steps to get to the top. Not wheelchair friendly. I would have given this place 4 stars because of the views, but I think it deserves 1 or 2 stars, and here is why. I saw a video on YouTube about fake Cuban cigars (I don't smoke, but I was curious to check this out). I know if you know cigars, the box alone tells you is a fake. So I checked the video again and surprise 😮 (not really thanks to the information I already had), the cigars are FAKE..... so before visiting this place, make sure you verify what you buy. I am surprised that these people allow businesses to scam tourists. Cozumel and their citizens live off of tourism. I don't understand why they allow this type of business. The Faro is very beautiful, and the views are breathtaking. Be very careful when buying from the shops...
