This was a fun morning stop with my fiancé on our way to Valladolid. Jesus was an amazing guide. He grew up in the area so was very knowledgeable; and even so was just as excited as us to see the monkeys. He even lended us binoculars (of better quality than the ones that we brought just because they were smaller/light-weight for packing). The trek through the jungle was close to 2hrs. An easy hike for those that are concerned about difficulty. Would recommend long pants, close-toed shoes, and bug spray. The jungle and lake is beautiful with ancient ruins/temples sprinkled about. We saw both families of howlers and squirrel monkeys quite a few times during our visit. The souvenir store had cute unique monkey embroidered items at a fair price. Highly recommended for those interested in seeing squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, and other animals in their natural habitat. Please visit and support...
Read moreVisited this reserve on our way from Cobá to Valladolid and went for the full package: guided walk, purification ritual, zip line, kayak and cenote. This package is now 1000 / person, which I think is a reasonable price. We were there for nearly 3 hours and could have stayed longer if we wanted to go back to the laguna for a swim. We saw a quite a few monkeys on the walk and enjoyed all aspects of the trip - even the small museum at the end is worth a visit as it gives some history of the location and the approach to conservation. My only criticism was that I felt the guide was in a bit of a rush and didn't give us much information.
Be warned: this is a jungle environment and parts of the walk are quite strenuous. Although in a harness you need to be comfortable climbing up a long rope ladder out of the cenote at the end...
Read moreWent late afternoon and were disappointed. Price is $200 MXN per person for entrance AND an additional $600 MXN for a guide. Since it was very late the guide agreed to do the tour for $500 MXN, but still very high for a 40 minute tour. We did see two spider monkeys from a distance, but we also saw 2 at the Coba ruins and one on the side of the road - that we fed a banana. The guide told us that a family of spider monkeys live near the trail, but not any Howlers or Toucans.
We do appreciate the need for reserves, and we're glad to help the local economy, but our guide told us the community only receives a small portion of the...
