My overall reaction, amazing experience! 60 pesos per person. First, drive up to the gate which is closed. Park and walk into the office to register. Only the driver is sufficient; passengers can wait in your vehicle. Second, drive in. The road is flat and bumpy. I started at 15 mph, then 10 mph, then 25 to 30 mph and then back to 10 mph, yes you'll drive in a clockwise loop. The first stop is a campground which requires 4x4 to reach. I skipped it this time. Second stop is the Elegante volcanic crater. You can walk the perimeter, 1.2 miles. May take up to 1.5 hours to complete. The trail eventually blends in with the terrain about mid-way but you can't get lost. The next stops are a second campground, another crater and back to the highway. I can't give anymore details. EL PINACATE RESERVE IS OPEN, but…it can close after big rains and road washouts. We went to the entrance at Km 72. They would only let you visit if you had 4 wheel drive, not all wheel. Recent rains had done lots of damage to the roads, so they are being cautious. We went and aired our tires down, great for comfort on washboards and some stretches of semi-deep sand. They also worked out agreements with two local ejidos who will each charge you $100 pesos per person to cross their lands. NO MORE ROAD BLOCKS (hopefully.) No one from the ejidos showed up to collect. If you don’t have 4x4, go the visitor center at Km 51. The visitor center and museum are all solar and very impressive. Two trails from there are nice. Es un lugar maravilloso, los cráteres son impresionantes, la vista es hermosa, los senderos van indicando el camino, a veces se pueden encontrar con los animales como las liebres que es muy común verlas, El Elegante y El Colorado son los cráteres que están abiertos al turismo y se puede caminar en ellos, eso sí, no se permite bajar de las orillas al centro.
Me gustó la diversidad de plantas como el típico sahuaro, pitaya, chaya, palo fierro, biznagas, palo verde, etc.
La distancia entre el elegante y el colorado es de más o menos 30min. en auto. La reserva incluye el Gran Desierto de Altar, el cual tiene una arena demasiado fina y brillosa, me encantó que se pudiera caminar sobre las dunas y poder ver tanto el Mar como los cratones, de igual forma las tremendas montañas.
La reserva cuenta con un museo y un centronde visitantes llamado "Schuk Toak", donde se puede encontrar una pequeña exposición sobre el desierto de Altar, la formacion de los cráteres estilo Maar, la flora, la fauna, y un poco de información sobre la cosmovisión de los pueblos; además cuenta con tienda para comprar algún recuerdo como literatura de los pueblos que habitan el desierto llamados pápagos o tohono o'otham, playeras, tazas, postales, etc.
La mejor temporada para recorrer este hermoso lugar es de diciembre a marzo, ya que no hace tanto calor, sin embargo, está abierto todo el año en verano el servicio es de 8:00am a 5:00pm e invierno de 9:00am a 5:00pm , es recomendable llevar sombrero, gorra, zapatos cómodos, agua y usar protector solar.
Hay un lugar donde se puede acampar, llamado Cono Rojo que se localizan en las faldas del volcán Santa Clara y otro llamado El Tecolote. El costo para entrar a la reserva es de $60 general y $30 a personas locales.
