Nevado de Toluca – A Stunning Hiking Destination

Nevado de Toluca is an incredible spot for hiking and exploring, offering breathtaking views and a unique experience. Here are some tips to make the most of your visit:

Preparation Tips Travel with a Local: If possible, go with someone from Mexico who knows the area and is trustworthy. It’s not dangerous, but it’s always better to have a guide. Stop for Breakfast: Before heading up, visit one of the small restaurants along the way for a hearty breakfast, a drink, and a bathroom break. There are no facilities once you’re at the site.

Getting There • Pickup Trucks: The journey to the summit is an adventure itself. You’ll likely ride in the back of a pickup truck, which is a fun and unique experience. In Mexico, it’s allowed, unlike in many other countries. • Pricing: If you’re with a local, you’re less likely to be overcharged for transportation. Tourists can sometimes face higher prices.

Hiking and Exploration • Save Your Energy: Avoid hiking from the base to the summit, as there’s plenty of walking to do once you’re there. Opt for the truck ride instead. • Timing: Visit early in the morning to avoid harsh sunlight and crowds. Weekdays are best, as weekends can get busy with locals.

What to Expect • Weather: While it’s cold due to the snow, the sun can be intense, so dress in layers and wear sunscreen. • Local Vendors: Check out the vendors when you return for snacks or souvenirs.

Take your time to soak in the beauty of the landscape, enjoy the fresh air, and get lost in the tranquility of Nevado de Toluca. It’s an...

Hills are alive. The trek to this place can be done a couple of ways. 1. Take a local transfer in a jeep to the foot hill of the trek point for about 50 to 100 pesos per person. This way you can see the sunrise if you start early. You can start the trek at the common parking lot. This can be a longer trek. The place can get a little crowded during the peak season time. It snows in and around the mid weeks of February. Both the lakes are pristine condition. Ensure you carry something to eat during your short trek and carry the trash back to the trashcan near the parking lots. Suggested way to trek is to walk around the crater, cover both the lakes, walk around them and head back down. If you would like to know the history about this place I would recommend doing this trek with a good trek company. The trek is moderately easy and not very tough, just watch your step around the loose gravel and rocks.Anyone can do it if you pace your self right, have something to eat and drink regularly and have some good company to do this trek with. It's good to carry some medication for mountain sickness, you may not need it but it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. End of it it's worth all the trouble. The view is just breathtaking. Pictures uploaded here do no justice to the view up...

a wonderful place and a medium difficult hike to the peak. I saw medium because it is definitely doable with just hiking sticks and decent shoes and doesn't take too long but the altitude makes it a longer endeavor than you might think in the first place.

a few things I think are useful for the planning: go as early as you can, because you will avoid people and have the place almost to yourself for a while and also because the afternoons tend to get cloudy up there and then you won't have much of the sun and the views if you don't live in high altitude, this will definitely impact your performance and you need to have enough fuel in the form of cookies and juice or sugary drinks that keep your blood sugar high bring sunscreen and sunglasses - no joke, you will get burnt so quickly the hike up from the parking lot is not a pretty one and just follows a dirt road, the same one the trucks are taking to bring you to the base camp so if you decide to hike it anyway, you will get covered in dust. we decided to pay the 50 pesos for the transport if you want to hike from a lower point, do some research and find the camino that apparently leads through a forest up to the crater. you should also be able to hike it outside from opening times of the national...
