Noul Neamț is a magnificent monastery. We walked from Tiraspol to Chițcani where the monastery is located and arrived there around 7 pm when the monks and priests were in the middle of everything prayer with beautiful chants. Like half an hour before arriving we heard the sound of the bell that was announcing the prayer. It was quite an experience to hear the bell in the middle of the forest overlooking the sunset over Dnester river. We listened to the prayer as everyone was pretty much tired. Then we toured the court of the monastery featuring another two churches that were not open at that time. Overall the court of Noul Neamț is very well maintained. At the entrance into the monastery there is a Bell tower that reportedly is the tallest in Moldova. Then we went back...

I visited the Noul-Neamț Monastery in Tiraspol by minibus, drawn by its reputation for monks teaching ancient crafts. The monastery, combining Romanian and Slavic spiritual traditions, was founded in 1861 as a protest against measures by the Romanian Principality. The monastery has four churches, a library, a museum, and workshops for icons, sculpture, and carpentry, all open to visitors.

During my visit, I saw groups of pilgrims, youth groups enjoying refreshments, and international visitors attending painting workshops. The atmosphere was serene, and the monks were welcoming.

Visitors should remember to behave modestly to respect the monastic...

Nice for a quick visit, but don’t expect too much: one church is still being refurbished and the other one looks too new to be attractive. You can climb the belltower for free (adventurous stairs!) for a nice view. By taxi it‘s a 10 min. ride from Tiraspol (50 rubles) or take the blue bus from Bender bus station (12 rubles).
