Duwisib Castle is a fascinating and unexpected gem in the heart of the Namibian desert. The journey there takes you through vast, arid landscapes, and just as you ascend the farm road, the sight of this magnificent brick castle emerging from the rugged terrain feels surreal. Built in the early 1900s as a testament of love from a husband to his wife, the castle’s romantic origins add to its charm.

Inside, it retains its old-world allure, still furnished with the original relics, giving visitors a true glimpse into its storied past. Unfortunately, arranging a visit inside can be tricky, which is a bit disappointing, but even from the outside, its grandeur is undeniable. The remote location only enhances its majesty, standing in stark contrast to the surrounding desert.

We stayed next door at the Duwisib Guest House, which was a highlight of the experience. From the guest house, the view of the castle at sunrise is absolutely breathtaking—a golden glow enveloping the structure and the surrounding desert. It’s a peaceful and magical sight that feels almost otherworldly.

Watch out when you enter the ladies toilet. Two staff members kindly opened the castle for us on the 1st of January. We paid 80Namibian dollars each. (5 people)After a very interesting visit my daughter and myself entered the ladies toilet. We locked the door. We were talking, laughing and with a very casual move we were very lucky to discover that one of the staff members was hiding quietly behind the shower curtain. This came as a shock, you can imagine. This Castle is managed by the Namibian Government. The castle is really worth the visit, and we were really looking forward to learning more about it. What a shame we had to...

What a disappointment, should've read the reviews before taking a detour to visit. Absolutely, do not recommend! Beautiful drive there but an utter disappointment, no card facilities or electricity, couldn't enter the castle because we didn't have enough cash. So run down on the outside with broken windows and plumbing, and a lackluster grounds keeper not interested in guests at all. Outer building was full of rubbish and everything just had such a rundown sad feel to it....

Although the castle will be closed for accommodation and the camp site closed until they're both renovated, they are currently allowing day visits where you can take pictures and take your time exploring the castle. The property does not take credit or debit cards so bring cash. There is no restaurant on the property but a few meters away you can get some refreshments and alcohol beverages from Duwiseb Guest Farm. There is also a souvenir shop, no food served to day customers.

Really interesting history behind this house, and so well preserved. If you want a sneak peak into the history of a well to do family in Namibia, in the early 1900s, this is a must visit. Very friendly staff and they give you an informational sheet to read more about the people who lived there. I just wish their little cafe had more vegetarian/vegan options, but I guess I understand it's in the middle of the desert. Perhaps some beans and veg?
