Annapurna is a classic trek -- it will drain you both physically and mentally. It has everything you could ask for and would qualify among the best treks in the world. It is challenging enough to keep experienced hikers on the edge but I would reckon it could even be done by a novice with sufficient common sense. There is no need for a guide/porter and you will find food and accommodation along the way. Food+accommodation cost me around NPR 1500 per day while on the circuit.
A few things to keep in mind: Make sure you have your permits in place from either Kathmandu or Pokhara. Carry enough cash with yourself. After Manang cards won't work. Ensure you are following basic precautions around AMS. Avoid sleeping higher than 500m compared to the previous night. Beware of leeches in the lush green jungles when it is wet season Be very very careful while crossing the landslide-prone patch just before Thorong Phedi. Be prepared for hiking up snow while crossing Thorong La. Enjoy the pain in your legs after the first couple of days. It won't leave you till you have the Trekkers massage at Pokhara.
Whether you like it or not - you will be in a zen-like state of meditation quite often on this trek. Mostly when your body is frozen from exhaustion and your mind is wondering where to pull in reserves to take the next step.
