One of the remote part of the country secluded or isolated and restricted for foreigners till 1990. Widely known as Lost Tibetan Kingdom. There is a high mud walled city.
The way of life in Lomanthang is similar to Tibet, from facial expression, dress and food habits. They follow Tibetan buddhism. That high wall was made to protect the city from harsh and cold Tibetan wind. I can say this part is the extension of Tibetan plateau.
The air is dry so is the land. Whole this belt was under the sea before. So it more like a desert but very high. The village of Lomanthang is located @ an altitude of 3860 meters. Magic of the landscape is captivating.
Since 1990, after the restoration of democracy in the country this part is opened for the tourist taking special trekking fee from foreigners. During 1960-1980 there was the presence of Khampa warrior soldiers after the take over of Tibet by China. So it was kept as a de militarized zone. Where any kind of military exercise could not be done. That is how it was restricted.
Establisher of the Kingdom called Lo is known as Ame pal in between 13-14th century. Last king was of this area is Jigme Parbal Bista who died few years ago. The facility even after the annexation of this small kingdom inside the territory of single Nepal. He was still given a title and some facility by the government. Now not any more.
Now the road access there is making a bit easier comparing to the past. Which in some ways changing slowly the life style. But still, this place should be visited because of the landscape culture and those many pre historic caves in mustang. Some of them are not reachable because of the continuous erosion process where the cave settlements were now a high cliff. Some few are maintained for the people to...
Read moreAlthough the local people recommended us to visit Mustang district in July because their trekking season usually begins on that particular month and there is a chances of seeing the greenery and their local festival (Drinking the blood of Yak) that falls on that particular month but our visit to Upper Mustang in April was also worth it because we got chAnce to see snow caped mountains and skied down through snow landscapes due to poor road conditions which are currently under construction. HOWEVER, overall we had a good experience. It is recommended to carry warm cloths, enough water and snacks while you travel in April because it is a lot of walk needed to be done in a dry land and not enough people would be around since they would be staying either in Ktm or pokhara in order to avoid the...
Read moreI didn't know nepal had such surreal landscapes until i visited lomanthang village. we can see a kind of desert ecosystem at that altitude in mid-April. However, one can enjoy the exquisite mountains with snow in winter. The weather is colder, so precautions are must. We even felt an ounce of altitude sickness since we travelled straight from beni(900m altitude) to lomanthang(4000m altitude) in a day. I suggest staying at kagbeni for a night and then heading to lomanthang the next morning. The kora-la border(also known as the Nepal-china border) is about one and a half hour drive from lomanthang village. All the off-roads with breathtaking landscapes surely...
