Last Sunday, I visited De Loonse en Drunense Duinen, and it felt like stepping into another world — a silent, golden desert right in the heart of the Netherlands.
The moment I arrived, I was struck by the vastness of the sand dunes. It looked like a mini Sahara! I took off my shoes to feel the warm, soft sand between my toes as I walked under the wide, blue sky. The wind danced gently through the trees at the edge of the dunes, creating a calming rustling sound that made the whole place feel alive.
I followed one of the marked hiking trails that led me through shifting sand hills and into cool, shaded pine forests. The contrast between the dry, open dunes and the green woods was stunning. I even spotted a few deer in the distance and heard woodpeckers tapping away in the trees.
At midday, I stopped at a bench overlooking the heathlands to eat a small picnic I brought with me — just a sandwich, an apple, and some water — but everything tasted better in the fresh air. Families were building sandcastles nearby, and I saw a few horse riders trotting through the paths.
Before heading home, I climbed one of the highest dunes and just sat there, taking in the view. It was peaceful, quiet, and grounding — a perfect break from daily life. I left with sand in my shoes and a clear mind.
I’ll definitely go back soon, maybe next time...

Read moreIt makes for a very lovely visitation, whether if you intend to just pathfind for a bit or intend to follow one or more of the several laid out wandering routes. There are regularly mountain bikers to be found in certain (usually the more bumpy, hill-like) areas as long as the weather is nice, but more often than not the cyclists will mind you more than you have to look out for them. If you're feeling hungry or parched there is always de Rustende Jager (translates the Resting Hunter) where you can go for a hot or cold beverage as well as a quick snack or a small meal for a fair price. When its especially nice out business tends to be booming, and most tables will be occupied, but a brief moment of patience will often be rewarded. If you're looking for a really nice place in the Netherlands to just enjoy natural forest and dunes, then please keep the Loonse & Drunese...
