Rien Poortvliet Museum — Attraction in Hoeksche Waard

I traveled all the way from Texas to see this museum! A friend and I were on a backpacking tour of Europe and this was the only thing I really wanted to see! As a child, my parents bought me Rien's "Noah's Ark" book for my 12th birthday and I fell in love. I was constantly flipping through the pages throughout my youth and often did "master copies" of the work in this book in my own sketchbook.

Rien Poortvliet was hugely inspirational to me and it was a dream to get to see so many originals of his, many of which I grew up studying! The journey to get there via the ferry onto an island nature preserve just adds to the experience and I could not think of a more appropriate place for this collection of work to call home. I'm so glad that this museum exists, visiting it is one of my most cherished memories.

We really enjoyed our visit to the Rien Poortvliet Museum in Tiengemeten. From the moment you step into what was once his studio, there’s a warm and friendly atmosphere. The volunteers working there are kind, welcoming, and clearly passionate about the art and the artist’s legacy.

Seeing Poortvliet’s original sketches and paintings up close is a real treat, especially if you're familiar with his work. The attic space is especially fun, filled with his famous gnome illustrations and lots of hands-on activities for kids.

Rien Poortvliet was eigenlijk een tekenaar. Hij heeft veel boeken uitgegeven, maar daar ging het in hoofdzaak om zijn tekeningen. Later schreef hij er ook zelf verhalen bij, het was een mateloze verteller. Maar in het begin ging het om de tekeningen die o.a. verschenen in de boeken van Wil Huygen, Jaap ter Haar, Leonard Roggeveen en natuurlijk Godfried Bomans. Hij tekende graag de natuur, historische tafrelen, dorpjes, straatjes e.d., ook dieren en mensen, maar zijn grote liefde lag bij de kabouters. Veel van die figuren vind je ook terug in het sprookjesbos de Efteling. Zijn museum staat echter op Tiengemeten, behorend bij Zuid-Beijerland in de Hoeksche Waard. Daar is een speciale zolder ingericht als extra museum van kabouters, voor kinderen een geweldige sensatie. Ook zijn hier veel van zijn boeken verzameld en diverse kabouterboeken zijn nog leverbaar, dus ter plaatse te koop. Het museum op zich zelf is niet groot, maar het bergt toch het leven en werken van Rien Poortvliet. De generatie die Poortvliet nog gekend hebben of hem nog van TV kennen, beleven een deja vu, een nostalgisch gebeuren en zullen veel nog herkennen, een waar jeugdsentiment. Voor kinderen zoals al gezegd is het een eldorado. Maar zij hebben niet alleen het museum, op het eiland zijn ook speelwerktuigen, waterspeeltoestellen als een soort waterspeeltuin en natuurlijk de natuur enz. Je kan op het eiland lange wandelingen maken en her en der is goede horeca om de inwendige mens te verwennen. Tiengemeten is een eiland, omringd door water, je moet er dus met de pont heen. Die pont vaart vanaf het buurtschap Nieuwendijk, thuis horend bij Zuid-Beijerland. Wie van ver komt rijdt richting Zuid-Hollandse eilanden, naar de Hoeksche Waard, Rijksweg A29.
