Vlietland — Attraction in Leidschendam-Voorburg

A fantastic experience in a fantastic place! A large, public lake which is free to access with plenty of parking (also free). Grassy edges leading to sand and then the lake, lots of places to sit or sunbathe, or walk if you'd prefer. We managed to get a spot under the shade of some trees but plenty of people took parasols/sunshades to hide away from the sun under. We took stand-up paddle boards and had no problem accessing the water and taking them back and forth as and when we used them (although they spent most of the day in the water!). There are no coastguards/lifeguards so adult supervision is a must for children. The lake looked to be very popular with families although there were people of all ages there. In addition to the lake, a section of it was cordoned off for kids/people to paddle and swim which was great knowing that it meant the children were safe from being hit by SUP and boats. At the lake there was also a place to buy snacks, which were a bit expensive but tasty. We had a great day and will be going back!

Een prachtige plas maar ga er vooral met de boot heen, een klein bootje is geadviseerd overigens want anders kom je vanaf de Vliet niet onder het enige betonnen toegangsbruggetje door. Ga je er met je bootje op uit met mooi weer, wat natuurlijk in de verwachting ligt, vaar er dan vooral niet naartoe. Nergens wordt de overbevolking van ons land duidelijker dan op een mooie dag rond de Vlietlanden. Eigenlijk lijkt het wel wat op zo´n pretpark waar je een kaartje voor moet kopen. Op enkele vierkante meters water varen duizenden bootje en veel te hard varende waterscooters, politie zie je er maar zelden en het is dan ook een veilige plek om ´streken´ uit te halen. Een enorme lawaaioverlast van gegil dat over het water ´draagt´ natuurlijk, met oostenwind het gebrul van de A4, bbq´s van groepen medelanders die volstrekt op zichzelf gericht zijn, Ghettoblasters op anderhalve meter afstand worden ongegeneerd keihard aangezet en ´s avonds rest er een centimeters dikke laag afval achtergelaten door de al even dikke ´bezoekers´. Nee, gezellig is het er niet, niet rustig, niet authentiek ook, even verder liggen de Kagerplassen, een goed alternatief. Met de jaren wordt het langzaamaan een echt drama ter plaatse, het is in 2022 echt 'hutje-mutje' geworden, grote groepen niet te penetreren bbq'ers verdringen zich er nu op een mooie zomeravond op de vierkante centimeter. Weg stilte, weg braadvrije lucht, weg sociaal gesprek, weg gevoel van ingebed zijn. Ik kom hier nu al 45 jaar maar een meer desastreuze verandering voor en van een maatschappij kom je denk ik mondiaal gezien niet zo snel meer tegen. Werkelijk zwart-wit en dat terwijl we toch juist...

The good parts: easy hike around the lake or around 8km up to 15km, probably nice swimming in summer, climbing activities for kids in season. The bad: this place is wedged between a town on one side and a highway on the other, this leaves about a third of the trail with the obvious noise of cars. Considering the location is smack in the middle of our most densely populated areas, it's a damn good place for a quick hike, refreshing swim or simply a chance to see...
