Museum Schokland — Attraction in Noordoostpolder

The museum tells the story of the former island. The old church is still there and can be visited. Outside the museum there is a walking path around the island and several historical spots can be visited. Outside the museum and completely free. Certainly worthwhile to visit at least the old harbour of the original Emmeloord (don't confuse it with the new town that got the same name), which has been reconstructed, but with some original buildings. Many more to be seen during the full walk around the contours of the former island. The rock garden is really interesting for people who like geology, but I heard it will be closed permanently...

Leuk en informatief museum met een leuk aantal archeologische vondsten, van botten van de wolharige mammoet, tot de gouden oorringen van een Schokkerse zeeman, die als begrafenisverzekering dienden. Vriendelijke ontvangst door medewerkster, die ook graag vertelt over Schokland als je er naar vraagt. In de buitenruimte van het museum kijk je vanaf terphoogte uit over de vroegere bodem van de Zuiderzee. Er woei nog een aardig windje waardoor je goed kon ervaren hoe de Zuiderzee vroeger kon spoken en tegen het eiland aangebeukt moet hebben. Het eiland is goed terug te zien in het strakke en vlakke Noord-Oostpolder landschap en is daarmee gelijk ook hét voorbeeld van de strijd van Nederlanders tegen 'de dreigende zee' en de kunst die om te vormen tot veilig en vruchtbaar land. Bezoek ook verderop de voormalige lichtwachterswoning en de voormalige haven. Je kunt ook nog 10 km wandelen of fietsen langs de eilandlijn. Het restaurantje, ten slotte, is leuk gesitueerd, met een uiterst vriendelijke bediening. Wij dronken er een lekkere Latte Macchiato en een echt héérlijk en mooi opgemaakt broodje kip in teri-yaki stijl. Wij vonden het museum nog interessanter en leuker dan we verwacht hadden. This is a fascinating little museum of a coastal community now on a little hill in the middle of a field. For anyone who is amazed at the ability of the Dutch to reclaim land from the sea, this place is a must see as living evidence of what has been achieved. The great food and service at the restaurant is a reason to come here even if you are not interested...
