The castle itself is beautiful and very well maintained, with tasteful, modern interior design that blends perfectly with the historic character of the building. The highlight of the stay was the breakfast — simple, homely, and truly enjoyable.
Unfortunately, what left me disappointed was the attitude of the hotel manager, who also serves breakfast. While he seemed to intend friendliness, his behavior often came across as rude, intrusive, and lacking respect for guests.
On the first morning, after I left two small pieces of meat on my plate, he commented publicly in front of everyone, saying I was wasting food and lectured me at length about where the food comes from. This was uncomfortable and unnecessary.
The next day, before we had even sat down, he raised his voice at me, insisting we sit outside because of the nice weather. This drew everyone’s attention, leaving me embarrassed and starting my day on the wrong note. Later, when we were relaxing in the garden, he joined us for a chat. The conversation shifted to sports, and when my friend joked about gaining some weight after having kids, he bluntly told her — not once but three times — that “the reason you get fat is because you eat too much.” What may have seemed like a joke to him felt insulting and inappropriate to us.
I am not sure if such behavior is considered culturally acceptable in the Netherlands, but having worked with many Dutch colleagues in an international environment, I truly don’t believe this reflects proper hospitality.
For the place I gave 95, for the service I gave 5 .. not recommended for international people, apparently we don’t understand the...
Read moreOur hotel for the night was Wolfrath Castle although I was a bit unsure as we drove down the track leading to it, past a huge industrial estate! We soon saw the blue and white chevrons on the castle gates and the surrounding wall and parked the car before heading inside. The castle was a real oasis of calm and Annet made us feel very welcome. Our rooms were in the main castle building and were incredibly spacious, tastefully decorated and wonderfully equipped. We really should have booked an extra night and taken advantage of the rest period but sadly I had booked too many activities and visits for us. After settling in to our rooms we went downstairs and crossed the moat to the courtyard where we enjoyed the cool evening air and sat outside enjoying the drinks and company. A lovely way to end the day.
I had a restless night so missed the planned 6km nature trail Mum and I were intending to do so we took a walk around the grounds instead. The castle is beautiful, both inside and out and we walked a circuit around the moat and then went through the garden and beech tree tunnel, listening to the birdsong as we walked. If the sun had been out it would have been lovely to take advantage of the numerous seating areas but there was a light drizzle so we went back inside to get ready for breakfast.
The breakfast at the hotel was fabulous and the host was great to chat to with flawless English and a very practised and engaging manner. The food was, where possible, local and we had a filling and varied meal before packing up and checking out. An absolutely wonderful stay, beautiful building, excellent food and...
Read moreI booked because of the good reviews. However the stay was absolutely not nice.
The location is next to a highway in the midst of industry buildings.
We arrived at 19.30 and the owner did not even want to sell us a drink anymore. Next shops are 15 min by car. Really? The fridge is just there....
We had to be at breakfast latest at 9. Really? In our holiday?
The room was small and very noisy in the morning around 7, when people where rushing to catch Breakfast. Thin and loud...
