Absolutely loved this charming castle and adjourning garden. We were originally there for the "Rose Days" but with Dutch rainy weather, we ended up heading quickly indoors to explore the castle instead. A tour there begins with a short film show casing the history of the castle in Dutch but with English subtitles. Then you take a tour around the place. The tour around the castle has a very peculiar approach. Each room visited had a separate tour guide who knew in depth the history of the room. This is definitely a high point for the castle. To enter, you must pre book as it is not too large. With a museum card, you only pay a little extra of approximately €4 to enter. The surrounding gardens were also a delight to walk around once the rain had let down. The rose arrangements for the "Rose Days" celebrations was the icing on the cake. I can imagine how charming it would be on a sunny day. If you're in the Utrecht- Zeist area, this is a cool place to check out on a day trip (or if you're just a wanderer like me lol). It's not the easiest to reach by public transport but definitely doable. We took bus 50 from platform C4 at Utrecht Central, and after about an hours ride and 38 stops, the castle can be reached in a 7 minute walk....
Read moreThe castle is lovingly and expertly restored in 2020. It preserved most of the paintings, furniture carpets and tapestries as well as books and many other items for the last 400 years. Each room is really impressive by having breathe taking history. On the weekend you can visit the castle without the guide. On the other days only guided tours are available so better book tickets in advance. But, there are really expert guides in every room that knows amazing stories about history of the custle and people who lived there. I'd like to thank all guides for their excellent work. Do not be shy and ask them. They know many languages and interesting stories to share. The park is not big, but lovely landscaped. There are flowers that blossom for the most of the year. Reserve 3-4 hours for the visit to enjoy the castle and the park. The car parking is opposite the main gate and free. One more thing to keep in mind, is that you can only have tea, coffee and soft drinks with some pastries in the Orangery caffe. To have something more substantial to eat, you should go to the town. There are 2-3 places within 5-7 min walk. Highly...
Read moreBeautiful castle and gardens. The history goes back to the middle ages, but the medieval castle was burned to the ground by French king Louis XIV. The 'new' castle dates from around 1680 and was redecorated by architect Cuypers around 1900, in which state it now can be seen. A lot of restauration has been carried out during the past years, but they are not there yet... Gives a realistic view on the high costs and efforts that comes with old houses though. Castle and gardens are however lovingly maintained by 'angels' and 'garden gnomes', who do a great job. Our guide was well informed, but a bit in a hurry (so I did not have the time to see everyting I wanted to see) due to the group that was to follow ours (probably a private tour followed by a party). Also a very fine location for weddings. Concerts (early music, jazz) are being organised at the castle grounds as...
