Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier — Attraction in Veere

The Oosterschelde Storm Surge Barrier was built between 1976 and 1986 after the devastating 1953 flood.

It's a great example of Dutch engineering on all disciplines, but most importantly, the large construction and dredging companies.

The barrier is 9 kilometres long and has 65 enormous concrete pillars with 62 steel barriers between them. Those barriers are normally open, allowing the Oosterschelde to remain a tidal area. Only with storm surges will the barriers be closed.

A true marvel of engineering, open for public traffic and sightseeing. This dam keeps the south west region safe in high tide situations, yet provides sufficient flow to keep marine life intact. Es troba a la regió de Zeeland. Es tracta d’una de les grans obres d’enginyeria holandesa que forma el Pla Delta, creat per evitar les inundacions causades per les tempestes i marees. Només per això ja val la pena visitar-lo, però a més, es tracta d’un lloc molt bonic, amb grans platges de sorra daurada, amb aus aquàtiques i un camí que recorre tota la zona superior del dic, que es pot recórrer amb bici, caminant o corrent. No dubteu en anar al vespre per veure com es pon el sol i tot el paisatge es torna de color daurat! A la zona hi trobareu diferents zones de pàrquing per deixar el vehicle. També hi ha un parc temàtic en referència al pla Delta, i molts restaurants i zones de pícnic.
