Very cosy and atmospheric castle that was owned by the same family since 13th century. The interiors are nicely restored with great collection of family portraits by Dutch artist from the Golden Adge. The English guide is free and accessible by your own mobile phone via the link. The castle is opened from April till end of September. There is a fruit and vegetable gardens. A bag of pears and apples can be bought from a stand near the entrance. The staff is very friendly and helpful. There are no lifts, but stairs are not as steep as in the other places across the Netherlands. There is a nice cafe with plenty of open seats under the apple trees. Parking is big but the place is popular, so it may be full on the weekends. The parking fee and ticket to access the park and garden are paid in the vending machine. The daily fee 4 euro for parking. Read moreThis castle is a 20-25 minute drive from Den Haag. The estate is located in Voorschoten. During the winter months, the castle museum is not open. However, Musica Antica holds baroque music concerts on the premises and one has access to two of the rooms in the castle.
The rooms are ornate with intricate patterned ceilings and large-scale paintings hanging on the wall. The floor-to-ceiling windows give a stunning view of the estate grounds and lake.
The estate itself also has a restaurant, a small farm area and a pasture. There are many walking paths, both paved and gravel, for longer hikes or walks. One can push a stroller, wheelchair or walker on the paved paths.
