Akaroa Head Lighthouse was maintained by a keeper until automated in 1977. A century after it was built, it was moved to the current position at Cemetery Point.

The original location was at Akaroa Head flanking the mouth of Akaroa Harbour on Banks Peninsula. To visit this former site follow Lighthouse Road from Akaroa. Half of the road in is tar seal, the other half is a gravel road. It is recommended to drive on it with a 4wd. However, you can drive on it in 2wd in low gear (20km) in dry weather, preferably on a sunny day without any problems. I drove in trepidation on the gravel road and it was okay.

There is no traffic, so you should be fine. At the department of conservation sign, you park and walk approximately 1km or 44 minutes down to the bay. I have always wanted to visit and glad I did.

Akaroa Head Scenic Reserve Walk is a marine reserve. Fur seals/kekeno can be seen in the bay, with local colonies of white-fronted terns/tara, black-backed gulls/karoro, white-flippered...

We live in such a world where all types of creatures, plants, microorganisms and etc. are everywhere, we just needed to watch, see, observe them into your eyes and feel the realization. Sometimes we filfil the cherished dreams of being there and we manage with the help of the giant google map. We can ⛵sail/roam across the world on-present or the medium of cursory, it helps a lot.

And this place also always serves the excellent excitement of being there as a tourist from inland and Outland. Since long it has been serving, you must have there. We must not mutilate our tender feelings of heart in the compacted area of few square feet lengths and heights, we should feel our deep well of thought and compassion. Please invest your time to acquire something newer than ever.

Good luck! Jai ho! 🇮🇳...

Pick your time of day and favourable weather for this one. It's a steep walk down to the lighthouse but there is an equally steep climb back to the parking.

You'll want a fine day and good footware. And a 4WD is recommended for getting along the road. It's single lane and campervans are not permitted.

Having said that, take your time and don't be in a hurry. Once you walk to the heads you get some fantastic views and we got to watch seals playing in the rock pools.

Oh, and take binoculars - you'll need them to see the seals and potentially dolphins.

There is, however, no guarantee on which wildlife may or may not be there on any particular day. Be prepared to have the sheer joy of being alive, being outside and having a walk be your...
