A wonderful experience to be a part of. As a sign of respect for ancestral spirits there is no photography or video allowed with in the cave which in some respects means you are more present in the moment and more appreciative. A guided tour will lead you into the cave where you are given lanterns to light your way along the wooden boardwalk amongst the rock formations. Deep inside you will be asked to dim your lanterns and appreciate the Milky Way pattern that lights up the roof of the cavern while you learn all about the life cycle of these mysterious glowing creatures. Suitable for all ages, however you must be steady on your feet to navigate the boardwalk and the steps with in. A must do while visiting New Zealand 🇳🇿

Went with a group of 4 in June 2021 and we were the only ones in our tour group. The tour went for around 45min, it was very informative especially about the glow worm life cycle, with some great local history included. The cave entrance is really cool and the glow worms are spectacular! The tour operator expressed that in pre-covid times some days had up to 1000 people going through the caves and now post-covid (since having a long break) the glowworms coverage of this cave system has intensified and that the tour operators have made changes to their operations to ensure the glow worms continue to flourish. I did find the tour a little expensive at $40 per person, I would think $30 would reflect better value.

I'm really disappointed. Firstly, the price is $50, whereas it's still listed as $40 on their website, which is quite high considering the following reasons. Secondly, there was an annoying and noisy tour group that disregarded the rules of the place, speaking loud, light up the phone, disrupting the enjoyable moments for everyone and you cannot hear the lecturer. If they can't be controlled, please don't allow them in or separate them from individual guests. Lastly, the time is rushed. We could only see the glowworms for 3-5 minutes in total, spending 10-15 minutes walking in and out. To be honest, it seems like they are trying to maximize the number of guests, which lowers the standard of visiting.

Absolutely loved it !!!

I recently had the pleasure of exploring the Kawiti Glowworm Caves, and I am compelled to share the enchanting experience I had in this natural wonder.

From the moment I stepped into the cave, I was captivated by the mystical glow of the glowworms illuminating the dark cavern. The sight was nothing short of magical, resembling a starlit night sky within the earth's embrace. The cave formations themselves were a testament to the artistry of nature, with intricate stalactites and stalagmites creating an otherworldly ambiance.

Our guide, who was not only knowledgeable but also passionate about the caves, added a layer of depth to the experience. Their insights into the geological history and the lifecycle of the glowworms enhanced my appreciation for the delicate ecosystem thriving in the subterranean realm.

The tour was well-paced, allowing ample time to absorb the ethereal beauty and take photographs without feeling rushed. The glowworms, with their soft luminescence, created an atmosphere of tranquility, making it a truly meditative and immersive journey.

What sets Kawiti Glowworm Caves apart is the authentic, untouched feel. Unlike some tourist attractions, this cave system retains its natural charm, providing visitors with an unspoiled encounter with Mother Nature's artistry. It's a rare opportunity to witness a spectacle that feels almost like a secret shared between you and the universe.

In conclusion, the Kawiti Glowworm Caves offer an awe-inspiring and intimate connection with nature's brilliance. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, photographer, or someone seeking a unique and tranquil experience, this hidden gem should be at the top of your must-visit list. My visit left me with memories that will undoubtedly linger, and I wholeheartedly recommend this extraordinary journey to all seekers of...

The cave and tour guide were exceptional. However, I have a few comments:

  1. girl on reception very surly and unhelpful
  2. price had risen 50% to $30 per adult, no discount for locals, yet a discount given to tourists on tour buses
  3. there were no receipts or tickets offered and refused when requested
  4. there were no pamphlets available as " new leaflets were being printed.
  5. the local library displayed leaflets advertising $20 entry per adult, yet I was charged $30
  6. I suggest that the leaflet could be improved by removing the family group photo plus the large photo of people looking at limestone walls, and replacing them with a photo of the stalagtites, stalagmites and columns, plus one photo showing the absolutely MAGNIFICENT rock formations that you see as you drive up to the site. These rocks should not be taken for granted by the family. They are as much a treasure as the caves.
  7. because of the 50% increase in the price, I will never return. It is exorbitant. There is only a small area available to the public and $30 is too much to ask....
