The self-drive part of the experience is quite unique. While the marketing might make it seem like you're driving the railcar yourself, you actually only use the hand brakes at the beginning and end of the trip. Even so, it's a fun and relaxing ride.
Gliding along the tracks, you get to take in some stunning views that you wouldn’t see from a car or bus. The whole trip is peaceful and easy, making it great for people of all ages. Overall, Rotorua Railcruising is a wonderful way to explore the area and enjoy a laid-back adventure.

The ride is about 1/2 hour each way and you are taught how to use the hand brake for stopping as well as other safety briefings.
I took my 3 kids along (5, 4 & 4) and they enjoyed the trip. My middle child was getting sleepy thanks to the drone of the engine and clacking of the tracks. So if you have a tired toddler who won't sleep, try this!
