Weka Pass Railway is a wonderful step back in time, kept alive by a dedicated and passionate group of volunteers. This charming experience preserves an essential part of New Zealand's rail heritage for everyone to enjoy. The journey itself is fantastic, offering picturesque views as the train passes lush vineyards before winding through impressive limestone cuttings in Weka Pass.
Whether you're young or old, this journey is a must-do. You'll genuinely feel transported back to the charm of a 1960s railway, enhanced by beautifully restored vintage carriages. The volunteers are knowledgeable, friendly, and always approachable, enhancing the overall experience.
I highly recommend booking online in advance. While picking up the physical ticket involves only a short wait, receiving the traditional, vintage-style ticket is a lovely touch that makes it all worthwhile.

We thoroughly enjoyed the carriages and especially the open air carriages. We enjoyed the detail paying homage to the time down to the conductor, and ticket takers' uniforms were authentic to the time. The Star and Garter's brazier kept us warm on a chilly autumn's night. Excellent hot chocolates and food options were offered by both the hotel and the End of the line Cafe 23, where the market stalls were set up. Well done, everyone. Appreciate all the hard work and efforts going into making...
Read moreThis was fantastic! A friend & I took both our kids, 3 & 4 yrs old. We went from Waipara to Waikari, stopped in Waikari for about 30-40 mins for lunch, an icecream & a look around, then back to Waipara. All the men we met, who work on the train were friendly & helpful. We sat in one of the inside carriages, then moved to one of the outdoor carriages with a roof. There was also another outdoor carriage without a roof. Such a great way to spend an afternoon! Beautiful scenery, train isn't fast or painfully slow either. Kids loved it. Would go again in a heartbeat....
