Quite an attractive side river area off the Avon River. Usually lots of ducks. Quite a variety of different breeds. A number of geese, usually in a different area, with a few swans. At the moment there is a pair of Black Swans with some older Cygnets. Most of the birds gather around a very small pier during the day hoping for people to feed them. There are public toilets off the end of River Rd. Be careful not to feed much bread as it can be detrimental to the health of the birds. Wheat, is probably a better option. Try throwing it on the platform. Some of the birds will eat other foods. e.g. diced, half cooked potatoes, carrots. Lettuce is also ok for some. It's a lovely place in summer. Not too bad in winter. Lots of trees and an embankment to sit and watch. A couple of garden seats not far from the public toilets. Personally I love...
Read moreBeautiful we drive in spot, the bridge is sturdy and perfect for a quick rest while walking around the area, the ducks are pretty friendly and can get pretty close, they love a game of follow the leader so if your not a big fan of ducks, I do not recommend this spot. There are some walking tracks you can take through the middle of the lake that are above the water level so you stay dry however I haven't used them myself. I do wish there were some bins around maybe just a couple as there was a bit of lose rubbish I took home. There are shady areas for a hot day if the sun gets a bit to much, there is also perfect spots in the sun to get a good tan while you read a book. The seats are further up by the road, so you won't get harassed by the wild life 🤭, they are clean and stable so if you are near by go for a wee sit and...
Read moreWe were unable to follow the path from New Brighton Road, due to soggy and overgrown conditions, but it lead to us exploring the Burwood Red Zone, directly west of there. It is notable for what is not there. It was a community full of houses, most of which were destroyed or damaged by the 2011 earthquake, and almost completely cleared of all traces it was ever such. All that is left are the remains of gardens: roses, hydrangeas, palms, and the odd electrical hookup box along the abandoned streets. Haunting to visit for those with...
