The walk to the hut from Waohine Car Park was extremely difficult with numerous obstacles, tree roots, deep mud, slippery clay surfaces. Suspension bridges were very fun and bouncy.
Please only attempt if you have experience walking on difficult terrain and can climb vertically up slopes held together by tree roots.
The walk from Waohine Bridge took 4.5h. Once you reach half way, the walk becomes considerably easier along the river bed (inaccessible after heavy rain) then across a flat grassy meadow for 3km. The meadow was beautiful although it was very wet with dew when we attempted the walk.
The hut had excellent space in the kitchen with surfaces, a great wood burning stove and loads of bedspace with mattresses. There is a pully for drying clothes in front of the stove.
The wood store, however, was almost empty in May and any wood remaining was exposed to wet soil and incoming rain since the store was neither elevated nor enclosed by a door. Hence the wood...

From there you wind up the valley crossing a from ridge lines. These ascents can be over 45° but never more than 20 or ,30m of total ascent. This goes on for 4 swing bridges and about 5 or 6 climbs.
Eventually you come to a lookout up a big valley with lots of great. I don't think you can see it but over to the right across the river about half way up the valley will be Sayers hut. It's not marked but there is a small cairn across the river as your walking along.
Continue through up the valley in the grass and the bush will eventyally come and you only a hundred or so meters away. Congratulations you've made it. Reward yourself with a wash in the river and a hot cup...
Read moreNice clean 20 bed hut with a helicopter landing area near by. Approx 5 hours from Holdsworth carpark. Plenty of fire wood, large food prep area and tables. Bit disappointed in the behaviour of a group of 5 young locals who decided to fill up the fireplace with plastic rubbish - please don't do dumb things like this while you're there, keep it nice for everyone! 2 long drop toilets were not nearly enough for the 30 people when I was there, including campers using the facilities - they were in pretty bad shape at the start of the weekend. Carry toilet paper and all...
