South Bay Recreation Reserve — Attraction in Kaikōura

We did this walk in two different steps but really enjoyed it. The first time we walked from the North side seal colony along the rocks then walked up the hill and back over the top. We got to see great views. The next time we walked from the South Bays walkway end up over the top then down where we came up last time and continued the walk over the rocks back around to where we started. This last part around the rocks did require some clambering over obstacles but we saw lots of seals, penguins, birds etc. and not as many people. We recommend this walk. People usually start from Point Kean Viewpoint, but I actually love going up from South Bay reserve more. It's quieter and view is just as beautiful. And at the end of the day, both are connected track. You can walk up either from the north or south of the hill and get to another. South bay has a new landscape from the aftermath of the major earthquake back in 2016. A lot of new ground lifted from the seafloor. A great family walk. My 5 year old absolutely loved it. Although the track was narrow and open with no safe guard. So take extra care where your kids...

Stayed at the new freedom camping area.we as a family hav been coming to kaikoura for 28 yeary we were disappointed when the kiwa rd part was closeed but can understand why and would like to see it opened next season.where we stayed at south bay was far better with good fishing.swimming .kayaking. the sign says dump station may be personal dump but not camper.lol.spent up large and had a great time .see ya next time we are in town kaikoura.
