What a wonderful track! Beautiful river and farmland. Not to mention the mangrove Broadwalk at the Horeke end! I went on a Tuesday, starting at 10am from the bottom of Imms Rd. This location is recommended if, like me, you were doing a both way ride; as I didn't want the big hill on the Okaihau end to climb at the end of the journey. I'm reasonably fit and not on an electric bike. It took me 6 hours, return, but I was relaxing and taking in the scenery. I also did at least 10km more than the 40km return as there is no clear end at Horeke. I wasn't the only one who made this mistake as there is a misleading trail sign with "Horeke 1.5 km", after you've passed through Horeke, leading me to believe that was the end. So I kept going on gravel road, until eventually I flagged down a friendly local who told me Mission house is the end. I was definitely tired and had a sore bum by the time I got back to my car, but the trail wasn't hard. Take extra water on a hot day though, I ended up having to ration mine on the way back. I saw a reasonable amount of people for a weekday, all but one other person was on E Bikes. Most people were mid 50's to elderly, and all but me were going one way and then being picked up. It really was lovely, I'll be...

Largely the same as most trails in NZ (and Australia in my experience), but does have some really interesting unique bits like the bicycle fence and Kawakawa and the train you can ride.

Reasonably well maintained, there is a very short 2min ride on a main road that some may find uncomfortable but otherwise it’s very flat and easy going.

You definitely want wide tyres, mountain bike style and perhaps some suspension as there are a lot of very big gravelly bits that can feel sketchy if you don’t/ aren’t familiar with handling big gravel.

Run by a very lovely group of people who will give you all the information you need and more and provide a good secure spot to park your vehicle should you need while you...
