Waihi Falls is a hidden gem nestled in the scenic countryside of Tararua, New Zealand. Located about an hour’s drive from Dannevirke, the falls are a perfect spot for nature lovers seeking a peaceful retreat. The journey to Waihi Falls takes you through picturesque farmland and rolling hills, leading to a tranquil location that feels wonderfully secluded. The falls themselves are stunning, with water cascading down a series of rocky ledges into a serene pool below. The surrounding area is lush with native bush, creating a beautiful natural backdrop that’s ideal for photography or simply enjoying the serenity. The sound of the rushing water and the fresh air make it a perfect spot for a picnic or a relaxing day out. There’s a short walking track from the car park to the falls, which is well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels. The trail offers a few viewing points along the way, giving visitors different perspectives of the falls. Waihi Falls is not only a great spot for relaxation but also a reminder of the natural beauty that New Zealand has to offer. It’s a perfect destination for a day trip, offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Best to go with family as there is also flush toilets and shed with bench and table. Must go if you around the area however there’s gravel road around 15 to 20 kms

Awesome waterfall Amazing to see when there is heavy rainfall, the power of water !! This is a must visit place in the area, I mean waterfalls are very calming and enjoyable to watch and hear their water cascading down. There is a BBQ area that’s under cover and there is a good toilet block also. I’m not sure if swimming is okay well it wasn’t the stormy day we were there. There are a lot of stairs if you want to go down the bottom of the waterfall but you can see it good enough at the top which is only 20 metres from the car park. Summer time would be nice too I would imagine. Take a packed lunch or portable BBQ to make the most of the time there Definitely a place to visit if you are in the area.

Pretty waterfall but don't with your dogs, ad they are not allowed, despite the sites forgetting to mention that small fact. Site mentions have BBQ facilities - there isn't a BBQ, but there is a table under a shelter for a picnic. Swim spots are deep, so not advised for younger children. Over 100 steps on the track down to the bottom of the falls Tararua District Pamphlet says Waihi Falls is on Oporae Rd - ummm no!!. Go along Oporae Rd and then continue to travel along Waihi Vly Rd, until you see Waihi Falls Rd, with the Waihi Falls sign. Continue along the gravel rd, cross over a small wooden car bridge and follow to the end. It is about a 45min drive from Dannevirke.

When turning off the main road and seeing the stone road up the hill it's easy to wonder if you're on the right track and when this stone road continues for a few more km, concerns are understandable! Stick with it though and enjoy the views from the road and follow the signs and eventually you will get to the falls car park where there is a picnic shelter. Once you get there, to the left there is a small toilets building and to the right you can walk a very short (20 meters) walk to the viewing platform, or you can walk further down (5 / 7 mins) to get a great view of the falls from below. On a sunny day a picnic here would be great. If you're looking for a peaceful yet pretty spot away from most other tourists then this is a...
