Bell Rock Loop is a beautiful trail with some truly breathtaking views – but be prepared for a decent climb! The track starts off with a steady uphill for about 40 minutes, so while it’s not overly technical, it does require a moderate level of fitness. That said, even if you’re a bit unfit or haven’t trained, you’ll be fine – just take it slow and enjoy the journey.

We hiked it in patchy rain and the track was muddy and slippery in parts, so good footwear is a must. If you’re fit, hiking shoes are recommended – but regardless, dress for the weather. The drive up to the start of the track can feel like you’re heading into the middle of nowhere, and the parking area can get muddy and slippery in wet conditions.

The bush is alive with native bird calls, which adds to the magic. The views from the top are absolutely stunning and worth every step. If you’re taking tamariki or less confident walkers, just take your time and be cautious – especially after rain. A memorable walk in a very special part of...

There is no car park, but there is space to park on the side of the road. Directly by the start of the hike, there is probably enough space for 15-20 cars. However, 100-200 meters before and after the start point there is more road space to fit 5 or more cars. We arrived at midday during the Christmas holidays, and we found 1 space. We could have driven on 100 meters, though, where there was another space to fit more cars. The last 12km's of the drive is good quality gravel road. If worried about not getting a parking space, it is probably best to either arrive nice and early or later in...

The car park is just parking on the side of the road so only about 5-10 spaces max depending on the size of vehicles. I'd say its best to arrive either early or late to get a spot. We went late and so ended up with the track to ourselves for most of the walk.

The track itself isn't too difficult but was made more challenging by the large amount of snow when we went a few weeks ago. It was an unexpected but great surprise as the track was beautiful with snowfall. Thankfully we had snow boots as in places the snow was a foot deep.

My favourite walk in NZ so far with the most...
