This is a must do in NZ. Lady Knox Geyser is a prominent geothermal feature located in the Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. Named after Lady Constance Knox, the daughter of the 15th Governor of New Zealand, it is one of the park's major attractions. The geyser erupts daily at 10:15 AM, reaching heights of up to 20 meters (65 feet).
The eruptions are triggered by adding a surfactant (soap) to the geyser's vent, which reduces the surface tension of the water and allows it to boil over rapidly. This practice began in the early 20th century when prisoners discovered that soap could cause the geyser to erupt.
The Lady Knox Geyser is set in a scenic area with other geothermal features, including colorful hot springs, boiling mud pools, and steaming fumaroles. Visitors can witness the geyser's eruption, explore the geothermal park, and learn about the geological activity that shapes this unique landscape.
Things to keep in mind.
Take a jacket if you get cold quick and reach on time. Reach earlier by 9.45 AM and catch a good place to seat. Carry food as there is none served...
Read moreLady Knox geyser, is not a one of kind geyser. When we heard about it we were excited having experienced them in Iceland, but it was not even close. It costed two people 68 NZD and was not worth it. When we reached the place it was slowly filling up with people, we were lucky to have reached early and got a great spot, only to be surprised to find out that the geyser starts bubbling and throws up around 10 30 AM, I was wondering how can someone be so sure about the timings of a natural thing. After waiting for some time, a lady crosses the barricade and stands close to geyser and tells the story about "why it's called lady knox geyser" and after some 10 minutes puts some natural powder into the geyser and within 3-4 minutes the geyser starts bubbling and goes up. So this isn't a natural geyser people, it may be natural but the bubbling and spraying part is induced for a very high price (68 NZD). And they say that they have been doing it since 1980. You can experience raw and beautiful geysers around Iceland, and this was disappointing. I am sorry but I have...
Read moreA fake show of a geyser! Shame I cannot do a review with no stars, as this is the reality of this event. We had been told the day before that this was a fake eruption, but did not expect the action to take place whilst we watched.
This is all about the money, I am sure for young children it is great to see and saves the challenge of taking them somewhere and no see any eruptions, but the only reason this one goes at the time listed is due to a staff member actively dropping in the soap !!!! not only that, they wait until they have got maximum headcount in the area. we were delayed as they wanted to wait for more people to get in.
Once they start the show, you have approx. 5 mins of an introduction, then the dropping of the soap into the hole, you then get the eruption lasting only 5 mins, then you all scramble to get out of the arena and then the car park. Think the car park exit took longer than the experience it self.
Would not recommend for adults or children over 10! Go to a real location where they are not making...
