The campsite was easy to find on google maps, but upon arrival, we were greeted with an auto barrier with an equally confusing map on the reception location. We tried walking up the slope and around to no avail, but as all helpful New Zealanders do, one friendly chap came to assist us and directed us across the street to the reception location.

Then thereafter we were greeted with a friendly guy who promptly checked us in and passed us a RFID tag for our vehicle to access the powered campsite.

We loved the sea view from our powered campsite, and the turf was nicely trimmed, but lo and behold, those pesky sandflies came in the evening time, and my wife took the brunt of it, and we also noticed a few other campers also got busy with their bushman insect repellant, but we had gotten some bites, such is the normal camping scene in NZ when you are near the lake, beach or water sources.

Our campsite is situated a pretty walk from the shower facilities and we have to brave the outdoors battles thru the sandflies again to get there.

But once we locate the shower facilities, there is a numerical lock to contend with to access the shower room.

After a nice cooling shower, we retreated back to our campervan for a quiet night's rest, until the next morning where the crowd movement picked up.

Do slow down when inside the campsite as there are lotsa children running about.

When we were leaving for our next destination, we just went back to the receptionist and dropped off the RFID tag and thanked him for the service rendered.

They can do better with a more updated map of the...

We are a family that tries our best to see silver linings and focus on the positives. We have stayed at many holiday parks in New Zealand and never had any issues. With that being said, I’m sad to not be able to rate this place higher. First of all, the staff was amazing. They were friendly and very helpful. They worked hard to keep the place clean as well. We did not stay in a cabin/house, so I cannot speak for those. We had RV’s. With that, I have no idea what we were paying for other than a grassy patch to park. Everything else to simply just BE HERE cost extra money. WiFi cost extra money, and it was slow. There’s no service so your choices are pay or have nothing. Hot water for showers was charged by the minute, with next to no water pressure so that it took longer than usual on top of that. The stove top I used was broken, the settings didn’t work, it just stayed on HIGH heat no matter what number it was on. The office couldn’t take my international card for laundry money. I’m pretty sure MOST of the customers here are international, so I’m not sure how that could be such an issue. The small play set for the playground was so rickety and shaky, the whole thing was about to collapse when the kids were swinging on the swings. I wouldn’t let them play on it after that. There was a small trampoline there that they loved though. The view was incredible, right on the beach; however, we could have just parked somewhere down the road for free and been better off. If you want more value for your money, I would recommend staying...

We booked the one bedroom cabin which was nice, clean and comfy. A couple of faults which would've made our stay AAA+:|1. We spent $16 on the dryer for one load of washing which still didn't dry out clothes, we had to hang them on the line.|Recs- upgrade the machines and/or provide pegs in the cabins to hang clothes, bigger portable lines in the cabins.|2. We had steak for tea which smoked out our cabin, there was no range hood, however, camp sergeant was present fixing the fault with our TV and he noticed the cabin was missing a range hood.|3. The bathroom had no extractor fan for the steam, however, the window could open which exposed the cabins above to see in, therefore we're unable to shower with the window open.|Recs- install an extractor fan|4. We had issues with the wifi, which took me nearly four hours to sort with the company( you can't get cell coverage in the cabin, so I had to stand on the deck in the cold to talk to them). They charged me twice for extra data. The next day I ended up ringing the manager and he processed a refund for me and apologized for the delay in service. I messaged the camp emergency number this issue and did t hear from them till the next day...

Great for families, the kids play all day along the driveway and at the playground. Close as to the beach which was perfect for a swim on a sunny day but it does mean the area gets very busy, seemingly with some people who are not guests of the campsite despite there being a boom gate at the front entrance, lots of cars were coming and going parking near our campsite. The sites are not private but a decent size for a car/tent. The facilities are large and mostly clean, with a code lock on the bathroom door to keep non-paying guests out. I'd say a little expensive considering you pay for showers and also pay extra for wifi, but the location to the beach and to New Plymouth is great, so weighing up the pros and cons we would come back for sure. Perhaps not over New Years as a quiet couple though, we definitely didn't do our research on the beach and campsite being such a popular New Years spot.

What can I say, this is a great place to stay. All the stuff for very welcoming and very helpful. The facilities were really good and a very good standard of cleaning. The shower blocks for men and women were very clean and could cater for a number of people. There is a well-equipped kitchen with multiple cookers, sinks and worktops though you do need to provide your own cooking utensils. Also a nice selection of gas barbecues that you can use. We had booked a cabin for two which had a nice veranda with seats outside overlooking the sea. The beach itself was very nice with fine black sand and a people out surfing and kite surfing when we were there. Lifeguards were present during the day with swimming recommended between the flags. A nice location for exploring the local area or even just relaxing on the beach all day.
