A credit to the non profit organisation that maintains and develops the reserve. Lots of good resting and picnic spots.
A good walk with some views. A LOT of bird life is present and there is constant bird song. We saw Tuis, Kereru, Fantail, Thrush, eastern rosella and many more. At one point, I was sure I heard Kaka.
The disappointing part for me was the condition of the bush itself. It lacks the dampness and undergrowth of most Waikato native bus. The ground is hard clay, possibly due to the way the reserve was treated prior to 1990. One-day it may recover and properly regnerate.
Also, a lot of dog walkers on the track so be aware, not all of them are on leashes. Gravel has been added to some tracks but this has really just made it more dangerous. I would not recommend going after rain as the clay will be very slippery.
The logger clearing was a cool spot to chill out the end and was loaded with birds.
The track to the summit was on well formed stairs, we then took the North Eastern route to the bottom which was clay and tree roots.
Easily accessible and enjoyable walk for moderate level of fitness. Worth it for the birds, but if you want a good example of native Waikato bush look elsewhere to one of the real...

Read moreA nice Bush Reserve with a few walking tracks, one to the summit's lookout has lots of steps. . Lower area has some picnic tables, and used to be quite pleasant, but it is so wet & mucky with some parts of track covered with mud last week.! NO Rubbish Bins at all, and Toilets are Bloody disgusting, would be cleaner to pee in the bush.! One would think they would have a Rubbish Bin by Toilets and at the Gazebo in the middle with the picnic table, they did have a small water tank @ the Gazebo to wash hands or water for your dog. . All Dogs to be on a leash. . Washing station for feet when coming in and leaving sometimes needs...
