I came here when I was a baby way back in the day, and I came back now as a man to be flooded with memories new and old. If you come here by car you can park on the grass but there's also parking at the beach as well. If you come here by bicycle you can get here taking the Great Taste trail from Nelson/Stoke/Richmond from the south. I recommend it if you are interested in having a beautiful scenic ride (the trail is about 15-30km depending where you start from) There are a few bathrooms and changing rooms there, but I never used them so I can't say anything about it other than they exist. Overall it's a lovely place to have a picnic or go for a swim and get sunburnt

Lovely spot for a picnic with the family. Plenty of bbq’s for everyone, some gas (free) and some wood (maybe bring some firewood). Can get windy on the beach but plenty of sheltered areas for bbq’s. Lots of space to kick a footy or byc. Went on 23rd Dec and still wasn’t crazy busy. Gates close at 8pm

Lovely beach to swim at, very family friendly. Excellent toilet/ changing facilities, plus a ramp for people mobility/disability to access the beach. With a great bike riding track and a bit of fun catching the Mapua Ferry. All in all, a nice place to spend a lazy afteroon

Rabbit Island also known as Moturoa is a sand Island. It is a large reserve belonging to Tasman District Council. Basically is has a long sandy beach on the sea side and a bike trail dog and horse exercise area on the other. It has pine tree areas so some areas inland are closed because of health and accident concerns. It has a bridge that access stops at sunset. No camping but great for long day visits. We bring visitors to it for a meal on the way from the airport. There is a bike trail from airport to the island. Photos show barbeque areas and some of the many seats for picnics. No shops but toilets changing sheds etc. Enjoy it in all seasons. No life guards but...

Love this place! Perfect for family outings especially with little ones. The water doesn't get very deep and no real rip to worry about. Plenty of shade under the trees and you can bring meat to cook on the coin operated gas BBQs provided. Or if you prefer a smokey flavor just gather some driftwood and use one of the wood fired BBQs dotted around the place. Be mindful of seasonal fire restrictions as the wood BBQs are usually locked shut in summer. Please keep it green and take your rubbish with you...
