Maruia Falls is a hidden gem in the South Island that’s definitely worth a stop if you’re exploring the area. The waterfall is easily accessible, just a short walk from the parking area, making it a great spot for a quick nature break. The moment you arrive, you’re greeted by the stunning sight and sound of the falls cascading into the river below—it’s a peaceful yet powerful scene.

The surrounding landscape is beautiful, with lush greenery adding to the scenic charm. It’s an excellent place for photography, picnicking, or just taking a moment to enjoy the natural beauty. The water flow can vary depending on the season, but no matter when you visit, the falls are impressive.

One of the best parts is that Maruia Falls isn’t as crowded as other tourist spots, allowing for a more serene experience. However, swimming is not recommended due to the strong currents. If you’re driving through the region, it’s a perfect place to stretch your legs and take in some breathtaking views.

Overall, Maruia Falls is a must-visit if you appreciate waterfalls and want to experience a beautiful slice of New Zealand’s nature without a long hike. A peaceful, picturesque stop that’s...

Created by a massive earthquake in 1929, Maruia Falls is a rich, wide waterfall with a river full of water always, even in the peak summer. I was there in a mid summer afternoon and saw it making beautiful rainbows against the western skies. Although quite beautiful, it can be very treacherous, particularly the water hole has so many boulder crevices hence many vortexs so its not a great idea to swim here as even expert swimmers have lost their lives here. Also, be very careful on rainy days, it can get swollen very quickly, fed by heaps of water sources from the surrounding hills of the...

Breathtaking waterfalls! The signs say that you can't access the top of the falls unless you are a kayaker and plan to descend the falls. I can confirm that this is a great big load of bullpaki.

The signs also say 10 minute walk to view the falls. 2 minute walk would be more accurate, with 6 minutes left over to take photos and admire the beautiful scenery.

There is a long drop toilet in the car park, which is large enough for several buses and also cars at the same time.

It was well signposted and it's definitely a must see if you are passing...

Great place to stop, park, take a break from driving. Parking lot is dirt/gravel but pretty spacious. There’s a restroom for one person that’s relatively clean. There’s a viewdeck a short walk away, and a short trail you can use to go down and go nearer to the waterfalls. Although it looks inviting, swimming isn’t a good idea because of strong undercurrents, there are signs telling you that too. You can get a closer look at the waterfalls by walking over the rocks, make sure you’re covered in bug spray because there are blackflies that bite.
