About 110km south of Dunedin along the Catlins Coast. You pass by scenic Kaka Point and come to a parking lot. From there a gentle 900m walk to the Tokata Lighthouse. The Lighthouse itself, built around 1869-70 is just 9.5m tall but it situated 76 metres above sea level, is out of bounds for general public. The platform around it offers spectacular panoramic views. Along the walk you can easily see fur seal colony down below. There is also a Rocky outcrop that houses lots of Spoonbills. You can see a lot of other birds flying in and out.
If you are a wildlife enthusiast, get your binoculars to be suitably rewarded. This place is teeming with wildlife, especially birds and seals. The Roaring Bay lookout hide is just down the road. Good place to spot the super rare Hoiho [ Yellow eyed penguin ] towards late evening when they come back to shore after gathering...
