Oreti Beach — Attraction in Southland

There is a lack of skyscrapers, ice cream stores and people, but the sunsets on the water, and the sky is always a different color; green, magenta, orange, blue. The water is refreshing on a cold day, and you can also drive on the beach as it is legally a high way. Keep in mind 2wd vehicles can get stuck in the sand, and driving in the water will rust the underside of your sand with the salt. The beach is also long, which is great for long drives at the 30km/h speed limit, but there's hardly any monitoring of this if you wish to safely go a little faster. Oreti Beach is an absolute gem on the Southland coast – wide, wild, and wonderfully untouched. Excellent beach, however, ALWAYS check surf forecast before heading out. Even if it's for a walk, the experience is improved by great waves. For bodyboarders, surfers, I would say that you can go out in all weather's, however I would recommend picking a day where there is no strong offshore winds, as this generally causes the waves to be very messy.
