Ulva Island — Attraction in Southland

A must visit if you’re at Stewart island. I’ve never seen so many birds unafraid of humans, they readily fly or hop towards you. How amazing is that? Love that this is a beautiful sanctuary. The walks are very easy with lots of information provided in the self-guided book. Waters are beautifully clear, and you can hear birdsong throughout the tracks. It's boasted about but I found it to be lacking wildlife. Had a much better experience on kapiti island which holds the #1 first ever sanctuary of these types in NZ. Ulva island could take some pointers from the set up of kapiti to have feeding stations provided by doc to help bring the birds down into the forest for photos etc. nice walks otherwise . $30...
