Took us about 2.5 hours to finish the lake loop walk with a 3 year old and a 6 year old. An easy walk although I imagine if it's been raining it would be quite muddy so wear appropriate footwear. The pontoon area is a nice distance to take young kids for a walk and there was also room for camping in camper trucks. There are toilets. Best for a hot summer day in the shade of the canopy.

Absolutely magical!!! The double security gate is a neat entrance to experience and shows how serious this reserve is about keeping unwanted pests out! There are real kiwi roaming the bushes here at night & during the day many lovely native birds around. The lake is picturesque and invitingly warm to swim in. Well worth the detour of the main drive.

The scenic walk around the lake is a delight for your eyes. (also educational) . I have taken many visitors to the area and all are very impressed. The ridge walk offers amazing view of mount Egmont/Taranaki looking one way, look toward the centre of the island you are able to see mounts Tongariro Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe then look directly in front to see the inland terrain and the lake. So picturesque and if you take that walk at sunset very romantic. I have water skied at the lake, taken kids groups to do fun actives. Tourists to see nature at its best and friends to go for walks and picnics .. in spring I have driven to see the the baby pukeko.Been to the lake with the Photography club to do subject photos and every time a great experience. The lake has a very peaceful environment a place to go to just take a deep...
