Love the place. A temperamental lake that needs treated with respect. The weather and conditions on the lake can change in minutes. Some good walks to be had as well as some good huts. A very healthy population of sandfly's is ever present. Lots of hunters here often. The fishing isn't that great. If any boaties are considering going through the Mary Island gap through to Caroline hut or the top end and are wonder if you can boat through then here is the deal. It can be done - jet boats dont even have to think about it as they just whizz through. But if your a prop driver like myself then it can also be done but more cautiously. I went through when the lake was quite low. The water level at the jetty was approx 70cms from the top of the lowest tier of the jetty. The minimum dept through the gap at this time was 1.8 metres. Going from east to west - when I came through towards the western side you need to steer only slightly right of centre of the channel due to rocks. a lot of logs on the bottom but like I say - can be done when lake is low - but cautiously.

Lake Hauroko Lookout Track, Beautiful Day. The track is very uneven surface when you start to climb. Follow the orange triangle on the trees. Its a short track but steep. Take your time to be safe.

Lake Hauroko Lookout track. Steep and rough in many places. 7.3km to the top and back. View from top is totally worth the effort! Loads of sandflies so take some spray!

Make sure its a clear day to see the true magnificence of this area. A long 27ks from the main road, mostly gravel. Surrounded by snow capped mountains. Fabulous spot for a picnic if...
