visited Stony Batter Historic Reserve on Waiheke Island, and it was a fascinating experience! The reserve is home to impressive World War II gun sites and tunnels, which were carved out of the rock with pickaxes in utmost secrecy. The guided tour was incredibly informative, and our guide, Mike, shared captivating stories about the history and restoration efforts of the tunnels.

The scenery is stunning, with unique rock formations and beautiful bush blocks. The walk to the reserve is well-maintained and offers great views of the island. It's a perfect spot for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Overall, Stony Batter Historic Reserve is a must-visit destination on Waiheke Island. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in New Zealand's wartime history and...

A must visit if you have some time in Waiheke! This has to be one of the best tours we've ever been on. We were blown away by the whole experience. The owner (archaeologist, musicologist and more) is so engaging, and his passion for sustainability and preserving this historic site is inspiring. There are some surprises deep underground which I won't mention so as not to spoil the WOW moments. His other tour guide seems to genuinely love what he does too and was so informative. Who thought tunnels could be so fascinating. We hope to visit again and attend one of the underground events. Thank you again - Jane, Ben & Emma...

Take your card/money on the hike as it's worth every single penny to enter the tunnels. The walk is free but you have to pay to get the tour into the actual tunnel. However it's really worth it!!! Do it!! Don't miss out. Both guides are amazing and clearly loves what they do.

The walk (is says 20 min) is more like 30 min if you are not fit. And there are 2 steep hills. The tour also takes about an hour. And you will want to hang around a bit so don't think 40min and you're done, you can easily...

I was a little surprised by the 20 minute walk from the "car park" near the gate to the actual tunnel location. It's a nice walk along a private road through a vineyard and sheep pastures. Many volcanic rocks strewn about the fields and as you come up to the tunnel location you get a great view of the ocean. The tunnel tour is fun and our guide was funny and informative. It's definitely worth a visit if you're on Waiheke in-between wine tastings!

Walked up to the reserve from Man o'War Bay. Quite a steep climb but worth the effort. The road is quite narrow and unsealed so you need to watch for traffic and can be covered in dust bypassing vehicles. The reserve includes tunnels and gun emplacements built during the second war to protect American warships. They never saw active service as they were completed in 1947, a year or so after the war finished.
