While searching for things to do and see in this area I came across this activity. I said to my mum that if it was possible I really wanted to do this. After emailing for possible dates it would mean that we would have to spend some more time before we could go there, but it gaves us a bit more relaxing time and a bit less driving to do so it did work out great.

On the day of the workshop (10th april 2018) it was extremely bad weather, and we were lucky we were very close to Barrytown (in Punakaiki) overnight so it was just a short drive away. We even heard that a bit later on the day cars were rolling over the road because of the strong wind!

Definitely made it an interesting experience while making the knife mostly outside haha. But those breaks in between made it nice, going into a warm house, have a cub of coffee and later a great lunch.

Really awesome to see how a knife is made and that it is quite a long process. Personally I would have loved to do even more of the process myself, but I do understand that it would take up to much time and that one day then would not be enough. Lovely people who organized it and with great humor haha.

After the workshop we had a nice toast and the weather was setteld which gave us an amazing drive and sunset towards Greymouth.

Thank you so much for...

Thank you very much Robyn and Steven, you are great hosts and l had the best time ever The smile is still on my face from all the banter and laughs we had while making our knives I could not image from a length of flat steel, a couple of strips of rimu wood and some pieces of brass you could show us how to create the knives we made Your easy and friendly manner made for a really enjoyable day It is a must to do for these of you who are travelling down the Coast Rd near Barrytown, West Coast When we are down that way again in the future we are definitely going to call in and get another knife ,only bigger this time Wishing you both good health and happiness for the future Kindest regards Tony Wynands Napier...

I had such a fantastic time here! Steven and Robyn were wonderful hosts and made the experience one I will never forget. Well worth the money - I felt like I got a comedy show out of Steven and that was worth the $150 - oh and then I got a bonus knife out of it. Fun cruisy day, was helped throughout the kinfemaking process and met some awesome new people. Plus was invited for their "homemade" wine at the end of the day as well as being entertained by their dog doing hoop tricks. My knife looks amazing and is very sharp. Did not expect it to look so cool when we started with what looked like a hunk of steel junk haha. Its something I will have with...

What an amazing experience! We came over from Christchurch for a birthday thing, and had such a great day. Steve and Robyn are pros, they've been teaching people how to make knives for 17 years now, so you're in safe hands. You get to forge steel, smash white hot metal with a sledge hammer, shape it into whatever kind of knife you like (within reason, no cleavers i don't think), cut the wooden handle to size, lots of grinding and sanding and you leave with an incredible knife that YOU made! Steve is a real character and highly skilled, and will ensure you make the best knife possible. Absolutely recommend Barrytown Knifemaking!
