Didn't plan for this for the road trip but boy were we glad that we stopped by for a short visit. We took a 2 min short walk from the carpark and were greeted by sights of pristine blue water and the Fantail falls. Spent longer than we intended to for photos and will recommend for anyone who is travelling from fox glacier to wanaka to drop by and take a look. Carpark was not the biggest we have came across along the way but could accommodate around 10 vehicles with a tight squeeze. No toilets available here.

One of the many lovely spots worth a short stop on the Haast Pass Drive. This one is about 40 minutes from Haast, on the left, though the car park has limited spaces. Facing the river you will find the falls 2 minutes along the track to your right, and while they are on the opposite side of the river, you get quite close. Walk down the riverbed to the left and you come to a series of cascades. There’s some shady areas for a picnic but no toilets.

We had been there in the fall. There is a small car park, be careful driving in. There are several really big holes there. You walk two minutes through a small piece of forest and then over the gravel from the dried-up river bed. We've been in New Zealand for a few weeks and we've seen far nicer waterfalls in other places. But yes, if you drive past it anyway, then you can just stop for a few minutes and go to the waterfall.

Fantail Falls is a waterfall in Mount Aspiring National Park, Westland District, New Zealand. The waterfall is in the Haast Pass, between the Gates of Haast and the pass itself, at an altitude of 450 metres. It marks where Fantail Creek enters the Haast River, with a drop of 23 metres.
