We went to Ojo de Agua for a few hours one day. We heard it was better to go early, as there are fewer people, which is true. After 10:00 am it starts to get really busy and noisy. It's $10.00 to get in, with a $5.00 credit to be used at the bar. The issue with this, is that they don't actually have any way of tracking the credits that each person has. My husband and I ordered drinks - the first round was fine. After that, they put both drinks on one bill, and tried to charge us for it. We argued it, and said that we only bought one drink so far and still had drink credits to use. The waiter tried to tell me that we owed $8.00, which wasn't even the cost of the drinks that we ordered (it was $4 and some change). I said that makes no sense, and told him how much the drinks were (and that they were covered under the ticket price). Then, he tried to argue and say that because my husband had a different waiter, we had to pay for the drinks (still trying to charge us $8.00). That's absurd. When I said that I would go find the other waiter then, he changed his story again and tried to tell us that it was a tax. Also not true. At this point, we were done arguing. Drank the rest of our drinks (overpriced, and honestly not good anyway. Don't get a frappe or a smoothie. They are terrible), and got up to find the other waiter. Suddenly, our waiter walked right up to the guy, got the correct bill from him, and started walking to the front desk (so he clearly knew and understood everything the entire time). We followed and explained the story to the woman behind the desk. She understood, said it was fine, and we paid the remaining tab ($0.20 US). Then we left the pool area, because that honestly ruined the mood. No one wants to spend their relaxing day arguing about a bar tab. The only reason I am giving 2 stars instead of 1 is because we walked up the trail and saw monkeys, which were the best part of the whole experience. There are far better things to do and see on Ometepe - I would avoid this place, and go enjoy some of the other incredible...
Read moreWe didn't know what to expect, but were pleasantly surprised by this gem of a place! The natural spring pools are incredible. Crystal clear, cool water complete with some small fish! It's like an oasis surrounded by jungle. So many huge butterflies fly through as well as birds. We went on a Friday around 10:30am and it wasn't very busy, lots of seating options. By the time we left at about 2pm, it had picked and there were a lot more people. But not so much that I would say it's crowded.
The 4 stars is simply because while having food and drinks available to order, it wasn't great. In fact, what we ordered was pretty bad and we didn't eat it all. Got a quesadilla and the cheese wasn't even melted, the beans had an odd, tangy taste. We did notice people brought coolers of their own food in, which is cool - I would have done that if I had a cooler or had known. Our server was lovely however and very attentive. His English was excellent.
Not that this can be helped, but there were lots of what I would consider midges or flies at the entrance - you are literally batting them out of your face. It was a bit off-putting but thankfully it wasn't like that at the pools. And according to my husband, the bathrooms were full of them which is kind of gross (admittedly I have a thing about bathrooms lol).
Overall, definitely recommend a visit. Bring your own food, enjoy a beer or a cocktail from their restaurant, and stay cool in that...
Read moreThis is not “easy” to find; I missed the sign and drove past it and then had to go back. The pool is great and the workers are friendly.
I was not able to do the trails as my knee is bad and I have not had surgery yet - but I plan to return again and do some of the trails.
The only disappointment I had was the restaurant. For lunch I sat in the restaurant instead of ordering from the pool. Several others were served before the server acknowledged me and took my order.
I ordered the traditional steak. I was not expecting USDA Prime or even Choice, the the steak had the texture of something from old cow we would have culled out of our herd back home. It would have been better had it been tenderized, marinated and then prepared as “Chicken Fried Steak”. I fed a portion of the steak to the dogs wandering around the dining area (four of them and one kept resting his head on my leg to be sure I knew he was there 😁). It was thin and not anything like I had at another restaurant in San Juan Del Sur (Tuani’s).
Somebody told me this was supposed to be the best restaurant on Ometepe and so maybe I just happened to have made a bad choice. But as I do not plan to try another meal here, my first and only impression is this — do not order the steak!
As I said, overall a great experience I highly recommend. For food, perhaps the hamburger would have been a...
