I recently had the pleasure of touring the Flor de Caña rum distillery in Nicaragua, where I was fortunate to have Olga Pineda as my guide. Her enthusiasm and deep knowledge transformed the experience into an unforgettable journey through the rich history and meticulous craftsmanship of this renowned rum.

Olga eloquently recounted the story of Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa, an Italian adventurer who, in 1890, established the distillery at the base of the San Cristóbal volcano. This location, with its fertile soil and unique volcanic climate, has been instrumental in creating Flor de Caña's distinctive, smooth flavor. Remarkably, the company has remained under the stewardship of the Pellas family for five generations, a testament to their enduring commitment to quality and tradition.

During the tour, Olga provided fascinating insights into the production process, highlighting that Flor de Caña's rums are naturally aged in hand-selected bourbon barrels for up to 30 years, without the addition of sugar or artificial ingredients. She also emphasized the distillery's dedication to sustainability, noting that it operates with 100% renewable energy and has planted one million trees since 2005.

What truly set this tour apart was Olga's attentive approach. She patiently addressed all my questions, ensuring clarity and understanding, and her warm demeanor made the experience both educational and enjoyable. Her passion for the craft and her role as a brand ambassador were evident, leaving a lasting impression.

Having visited numerous distilleries worldwide, I can confidently say that this experience stood out, largely due to Olga's exceptional guidance. Her dedication and expertise not only enriched my appreciation for Flor de Caña rum but also underscored the brand's legacy of excellence. I look forward to returning and savoring the superb rum offerings once more.

Great experience. I highly recommend it!!!

Once last note: make sure you make reservations or you will not be able...

If you ever find yourself in Nicaragua and don’t take the Flor de Caña Rum Tour, you’re missing out on a once-in-a-lifetime experience — and if you’re lucky enough to get Bryanna Flores as your tour guide? Consider yourself blessed by the rum gods themselves.

From the very first moment, Bryanna didn’t just guide us — she transported us. Her energy? Electric. Her knowledge? Deep as a Flor de Caña 25-year pour. Her storytelling? Smooth, rich, and unforgettable — just like the rum we came to celebrate.

She walked us through history with passion, humor, and heart — making every moment feel like a scene from a beautifully crafted documentary. You could tell she wasn’t just doing a job — she was sharing something she loved, something she lived, and that made all the difference. The distillery? Impressive. The rum? Immaculate. But Bryanna? She’s what made the tour legendary.

So from the bottom of our hearts, straight outta Virginia, USA — Thank you, Bryanna Flores. For the laughs, the facts, the flavor, and the vibe. You didn’t just show us Flor de Caña — You made us fall in...

The Flor de Caña Tour was an incredible experience from start to finish. Our tour guide, Olga, was absolutely amazing — knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about the history and craftsmanship behind this legendary Nicaraguan rum. She explained every step of the distilling and aging process in detail, making it easy to appreciate just how much tradition and care go into every bottle.

One of the most unique parts of the visit was learning how the rum is naturally aged in bourbon barrels without added sugar or artificial ingredients — a true commitment to purity and quality. The highlight of the tour was the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to taste a 38-year-old rum, a special edition not sold anywhere outside the distillery. It was smooth, rich, and full of history in every sip.

If you love rum or simply enjoy learning about local craftsmanship and culture, this tour is a must-do in Nicaragua. Thank you, Olga, for making this visit truly...

We were thankfully lucky enough to do the VIP tour, which I would recommend if you are able. The tastings were great, especially the barrel strength 37 year old that I would love to purchase if available. Two notes though. First, this tour does not include any of the distillation process, which is the heart of the operation. Having done many such tours in the past, this is the only one that entirely skipped the most important step. Second, we would have left with thousands of dollars in product if the prices had been reasonable. The special 30 year bottle is almost $900 more at the factory than ordering online in the States. The 25 year bottle is $100 less in the States from any regular store without the hassles of shipping or importation. They have a wonderful experience set up. They just need to capitalize on it.

The VIP tour was very nice but not quite worth $100. If you want to taste special rums that you can't buy, it's just the thing. Otherwise I would recommend the normal tour. Unfortunately, you don't see the distillation process and bottling in either tour, which would have been the most important thing. The young lady giving the tour is lovely, but tries too hard to be professional. As a result, she lacks a bit of a laid-back attitude. Her English is very good and she is an asset to the company but: "Mas tranquilo porfa ;)" The company tries to be sustainable but gives us plastic cups. I know they are biodegradable but real glasses would still be much better.
