The first story building in Nigeria is situated in the historical and peaceful Kingdom of Badagry, which lies close to the Atlantic ocean on the western coast of Lagos State, Nigeria. The building was built by the Anglican missionaries, Rev,. C. Golmer and Rev. Henry Townsend in 1845. All the building materials were brought from Sheffield in England. It was in this building that Rev. Samuel Ajayi Crowther translated the English Bible to Yoruba Bible. The Bible still resides in the building till today. The first story building is a one story building built with burnt bricks and timber used to support the structure. The staircase and deck is made of timber. The roofing sheet is corrugated iron sheets that has withstood the test of time. This building has become a sort of Mecca for tourists from all over the world who troop there daily. On average more than 20, 000 tourists visit the...

Upon arrival, there’s a tour guide within the compound to guide around the building.

The first-storey building is located in Badagry, Lagos State. The foundation of the building was laid in 1842 and the house was completed in 1845.

History has it that the ancient structure was erected by Reverend Henry Townsend of the Church Missionary Society (CMS).

The structure was occupied by Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the first African C.M.S Bishop when he undertook the translation of the Holy Bible from English to Yoruba.

It was also used as Vicarage for Saint Thomas...

I went there with my family. We were just expecting to take pictures and leave but we were met by an extremely friendly tour guide. The building itself is phenomenal. It has been standing since 1845 and was built by my african ancestors long before I was born. Our tour guide ended up following us to two other museums and he charged a very fair price. I definitely recommend coming to learn a bit more about Nigerian history and the History of Christianity, Slave Trade and the wonderful area...

The story behind the first storey building in Nigeria is beautiful. The curator was very detailed in his story telling and he makes you feel like you are living in the said time while in the building. We also went to the slave market, where we saw the chains used by the slave masters then to chain slaves, we saw the umbrellas and gin bottles that 40 able bodied men were exchanged for, and the prison room were these slaves were kept. Badagry is a must visit, it gives you an idea of our ancestors
