The tobacco museum in Prilep is located a little bit outside of the city, within the courtyard of the Tobacco Institute. You must to announce your visit in advance in the Prilep museum, so they can give you a guide. Always ask for Mr. Aleksandar Cvetkovski, who is custodian in the museum and knows a lot about tobacco himself, since he is a passionate smoker.
The collection counts around 2000 artifacts, but in the Museum of tobacco only 750 of them are exposed. The majority are the pipes with a lot of motives, ornaments, many of them are from world famous manufacturers including those, who were exposed to the world exhibitions in Vienna and Paris in the 18th and 19th century. Even, there is a sailor's etui (1497), an original artifact from the second trip of Columbus to America, on a display.
The chibouks made of gold, silver, enamel, mother of pearl, ivory and bone of rhinoceros are the pride of the Tobacco Museum, they really are unique. Impressive are the snuffboxes made of polished wood, turtle armor and nephritis. The value of the exhibits for the production, storage and enjoyment of tobacco placed this museum in one of the best equipped in the Balkans. The collection with its rarity, excellence and beauty leaves the visitors breathless, reminding them of its luxury that tobacco is a phenomenon of the absurd.
