Ski resort „Popova Shapka“ — Attraction in Municipality of Tetovo

It’s beautiful during winter and ski tickets are not expensive. However, do not expect much. If you go over the weekend or winter break, you should arrive by 8am the latest, as there is not too many parking spaces and you will walk to the centers. There is plenty of rental places for skis/snowboard and sleds. There are a lot of kids sledding at the very bottom and depending on which ski trail you take, you may need to go past them which is not ideal. The trails are not all connected and sometimes you have to either hike or walk the distance. Only one of the ski lifts is updated and very nice. The coffee shop is ok, but pricey which is to be expected. The staff is nice though. There is no changing stations for babies but they let me use the inside even though it’s closed currently. There’s limited amount of seating outside and on nice days it will most definitely be full. The bathrooms for guests (around the back) are horrible. No toilet paper/soap/warm water… Majority of the people that visit this place do not care about its cleanliness and unfortunately there’s no way...

I visited it for the first time and I am satisfied. I traveled 1 hour from Skopje to the Popova Shapka ski center. I arrived at 8:30a.m. on sunday morning and the parking lots were full so I had to go back and park on the side of the street. The parking lot is dirt and has mud, so you need to be careful when parking or walking past it. There are 3 parking lots and all of them are mud. I find that parking is a very big problem here and it doesn't have the capacity to accommodate so many cars. Already at 8:30a.m. there is a crowd in the morning. Best to avoid weekends in winter because of the crowds. There are several ski slopes, cafes, sales of ski equipment, a ski school, a church and a large cross. In most cafes, Albanian music is played, instead of Macedonian and foreign, which I think is not appropriate for a ski center in Macedonia. Das Skigebiet ist ein Sinnbild für die Probleme Nordmazedoniens. Alles scheint darauf ausgelegt zu sein, den Touristen den Aufenthalt so unangenehm wie möglich zu machen. Korruption und Geldgier dominieren und verhindern eine positive Entwicklung des Skigebiets.

Der erste Eindruck war durchaus vielversprechend: eine beeindruckende Landschaft, umgeben von verschneiten Bergen. Doch was das Skigebiet daraus gemacht hat, ist schlichtweg enttäuschend. Es gibt drei Sessellifte, von denen allerdings nur einer wirklich in Betrieb bzw. brauchbar ist. Einer der drei Lifte führt nur über einen kurzen Abschnitt ohne zusätzliche Abfahrtsmöglichkeiten und ist daher kaum nützlich. Die größte Frechheit aber ist, dass der mit Abstand längste Sessellift überhaupt nicht betrieben wird. Der Grund dafür liegt auf der Hand: Man will die Touristen dazu zwingen, das völlig überteuerte Snowcat-Service zu nutzen – umgerechnet fast 200 Euro pro Stunde (11.000 Denar)! Das ist absurd. Selbst in den Alpen zahlt man für ein solches Angebot nicht annähernd so viel.

Diese Korruption und Geldgier sorgen dafür, dass Touristen, insbesondere aus den Alpen, mit Sicherheit kein zweites Mal wiederkommen. Gäbe es ein solch miserables Angebot bei uns in den Alpen, würden die Medien schon am nächsten Tag darüber berichten. Zudem bin ich mir sicher, dass ein solches Vorgehen bei uns gar nicht legal wäre – ein Skigebiet teilweise geschlossen zu halten, um mehr Geld aus den Besuchern zu pressen. Nach drei Abfahrten hatten wir genug, weil es schlicht nichts mehr zu entdecken gab. Unter diesen Umständen waren selbst die 20 Euro für den Tagespass viel zu teuer. Zum Vergleich: In den Alpen zahlt man zwar das Doppelte oder sogar das Dreifache, hat dafür aber ein 20-faches Angebot – und wird respektvoll behandelt.

Auch das Personal passt leider zum Gesamteindruck: unfreundlich und genervt. Landschaftlich hat Nordmazedonien viel zu bieten, aber die Kombination aus Unfreundlichkeit, Geldgier und Korruption macht das Land für regelmäßige Besuche unattraktiv.
