We visited in 7/23/22. This is a beautiful wooden church (one of 28 of this type in Norway) built in 1630s. It has a beautiful view of the fjord below. Parking lot is located next to the church with information boards about the history of the church. To enter you have to pay 80 NOK and for seniors and children 60 NOK. You can pay by credit card. They also sell shirts with the picture of the church and booklets. When you enter they have laminated cards about the history of the church in at least 5 languages. Visit to this church was one of the highlights of our trip to Norway because of the historical context they provided on the cards in the church and the info boards by the parking lot.

The parking is located at the back of the church, which the access is about 100 meters away from the church, turn right onto Stavkirkevein, parking is at the end of the road. This stave church is unique, with about 5 supporting cross beams on each side. We didn't get to visit inside the church (closed since beginning of September), its exterior itself is beautiful and interesting enough for us, especially when compared to the modern white color church next to it.

What an amazing place. Much of the original staining/painting of the interior woodwork is still in good nick. It was saved from demolition by a private group who bought it when the new church was being built next door. Get a guide for some history…men/women seating areas, trolls, invaders! The last photo is of the new church, no comparison.

This is a very impressive old wooden church with a long history and a beautiful interior, painted and decorated over hundreds of years. It feels both old and intimate somehow, part of the warp and weft of the community it has served over these many, many years.

I would love to visit without a couple of coach loads of fellow tourists but it was not to be this time. We were given a presentation by two charming young women in cloaks, who explained in excellent Norwegian, English and German to this gaggle of disparate Hurtigruten passenger nationalities, all about this lovely building.

The location of this church and the new one nearby has a superb outlook over a wide panorama of fields, fjords and mountains. It is important when visiting that you do pause for a moment and look where you are.

An interesting and rewarding visit. Thank you to the two young women who did such a great job and waved us off,...
